Keanu Reeves is one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood, and for many reasons. The ultra-private star keeps much of his life to himself, including his long-term relationship with artist Alexandra Grant. While they’ve walked red carpets together and shared the occasional glimpse into their world through interviews, they’ve largely kept their relationship out of the spotlight.
© GettyThis week, Grant offered a rare and genuinely sweet peek into their wholesome life. On Tuesday, she revealed on Instagram that after seeing Waiting for Godot in New York City, Reeves invited her on a date ice-skating at Rockefeller Center. She shared an adorable photo of the two on the ice, and a video that looked straight out of a romantic movie.
© @grantalexandraGrant opened up about the night in the caption, writing, “Last Monday, after the run of Waiting for Godot, Keanu invited me on a date in New York City…” She even gave a shout-out to everyone at the rink for making them feel “right at home,” cheering them on, and keeping them warm with hot cocoa and pompom hats.
The artist shared that Reeves had to get new skates for the occasion, writing that “getting back on ice after a few decades and moving from hockey skates to figure skates and #$%@ toe picks is no joke!”
She went on to quote Alysa Liu, "Connections with people—that’s the most important thing in life. It overrides everything," adding, "So yes, always yes to connecting! Yes to joy, yes to getting out there even when beyond tired, yes to trying something new, yes to doing it your way, and staying open to surprise!"
© Qian Jun/MB Media, Getty ImagesWhat makes the date even sweeter is the context. Just last month, Grant told The Cut that she was learning how to ice-skate, explaining that after living near Chelsea Piers, she decided to start, admitting, “it’s hard.”
She shared that she goes out on the ice at least once a week, has a trainer, and often skates to Sia and power ballads. She explained that "being not good at something is really important."
“I like learning something where one is not an expert,” she said, adding that skating helps her cultivate “a space of childlike curiosity.” Which means Reeves took her newfound hobby and turned it into an unforgettable night, making it even sweeter.
Their love story
© GettyWhile Reeves is known for his work on the screen, Grant is a visual artist and is highly respected. She studies language and written texts through painting, drawing, sculpture, video, and more.
They first met in 2009 at an event, and they went on to collaborate on Reeve's poetry book Ode to Happiness, with Grant providing the illustrations. It was published by Gerhard Steidl in 2011.
Their second collaboration was Shadows in 2015, and they co-founded their publishing company, X Artists’ Books, in 2017.
It's unclear when things got romantic, though many cite their 2019 LACMA appearance as their public debut. But their first red carpet together actually came earlier that year at the MOCA Benefit at The Geffen Contemporary. Sources later shared they’d been dating “for years."
