After living in the United States for several years, last fall Alejandra Silva fulfilled her dream of settling in Spain with Richard Gere and their children. The actor said at the time that they would be spending a long season in Madrid: “She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so I think it’s only fair I give her at least six living in hers,” the Pretty Woman star said in November 2024, shortly after they moved. However, less than a year later, and despite all expectations, the couple has bid farewell to their Spanish adventure.
“It was wonderful,” the actor confirmed to Hello! when asked if the rumor was true that he and his family had returned to the United States. “We’re back here now, but our family spent a year in Spain. And the most important thing I can say is that Ale was truly happy with her family, her friends, her culture, and her city. And the food." He explained a few days ago during the screening of his documentary, Wisdom and Happiness, that all of it—those wonderful aspects of the culture—contributed to Ale's happiness, including an intimate conversation with the Dalai Lama about inner peace, compassion, and achieving happiness in the 21st century.
From what we have learned, the reason behind this surprising decision mainly comes down to logistics. The actor travels constantly to the United States for work, and not just there. Over the past few months, he has practically been around the world for matters related to his foundation, The Gere Foundation. Alejandra joins him whenever she can, but there are also the children: Albert, from her previous marriage; Alexander, six; and James, five. The little ones were born and raised there, and it is not always simple. On top of that, the actor’s eldest son, Homer, lives in the United States. So everything seems to indicate that it is simply more practical to keep their family base on the other side of the Atlantic. This decision has been made, at least for the time being.
Apparently, staying in New York was a last-minute decision made in early September, just a few days before they were set to return to Spain after spending part of the summer there, practically with their bags already packed. Given Richard’s hectic schedule, it seems Alejandra was the one who ultimately decided to stay and change plans for her husband and their children, who are now back in school in the United States. The house they bought in an exclusive neighborhood on the outskirts of Madrid, where they have carried out major renovations in recent months, remains open. The plan, for now, is to keep it, since they will be returning often for work, social projects in Spain, and to visit family and friends.
In fact, they recently spent a few days at their home in Spain, and in the coming weeks we will see Alejandra back in Madrid. As mentioned, nothing has changed when it comes to her commitments and involvement in charitable causes. There's a chance that their life in Spain isn't entirely closed, and a potential return is still a possibility. They will not return this year, but who knows, maybe they will next year. That is a decision the couple will take calmly, always with their family’s happiness and well-being in mind.
