After nearly 20 years of marriage, Nicole Kidman is dealing with more than just heartbreak, the Hollywood star reportedly feels "betrayed."
Nicole filed for divorce from country star Keith Urban on September 30, but insiders say the emotional journey started long before the paperwork and the news.
“She feels betrayed,” a source told Page Six. “She feels really upset.” Just days before their split was made public, Keith Urban appeared on the series premiere of CBS’s 'The Road,' where he performed his new single 'Straight Line,' a song he openly described earlier this year as being about escaping a “soul-sucking routine.”
“‘Straight Line’ is wanting to break out of a soul-sucking routine that you might be stuck in: maybe in a relationship, a job, with creativity, with yourself… whatever it is!!” he wrote on Instagram back in February. While Urban didn’t name names, the implication was unmistakable to fans.
Especially when taken in the context of the couple’s now-confirmed split, the message seemed to be clear. His performance on 'The Road,' where he also admitted to feeling “lonely and miserable” on tour, seemed to suggest that their marriage had taken a turn.
“It’s a message of feeling alive again and getting out from under that dark cloud,” Urban added in a separate post. For Nicole, who sources say was “blindsided” by the breakdown of their relationship, the timing and tone of Urban’s remarks were not taken in the best way, especially amid rumors that he’s already moved on with a new woman.
Kidman and Urban had reportedly been living separately since early summer. According to People, Urban had “quietly” moved out, and their inner circle wasn’t shocked by the formal split.
“Their lives were moving in different directions,” one insider said. “Once he quietly set up his own place, it felt like the writing was on the wall.” Sources close to Kidman say she was actively trying to save the marriage, and didn’t expect Urban to make such a public statement before their divorce was finalized.
“She didn’t want this,” another insider told People. “She’s been stressed because she knew the separation would eventually become public and she was dreading it.”
Urban’s decision to go public with such emotionally charged lyrics, just as his marriage was falling apart, is part of what Kidman reportedly sees as a deep emotional betrayal.
However, Nicole is embracing her new life chapter. Back in Nashville after a trip to Europe, she’s focusing on her family and her next chapter.
“She isn't someone who dwells on regrets — she believes everything happens for a reason,” a source told People.
In a Harper’s Bazaar interview published after the divorce news, Kidman reflected on navigating hard times. “You are going to have to feel it, and it's going to feel insurmountable at times. You’re going to feel like you’re broken, but if you move gently and slowly — and it can take an enormous amount of time — it does pass.”
