Nicole Kidman may be facing major personal change, but she’s not doing it alone. This summer, the actress immersed herself in both work and close companionship while filming 'Practical Magic 2' in London alongside Sandra Bullock.
The sequel, which wrapped in early September, brought the iconic co-stars back together more than two decades after their original 1998 portrayal of witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens. In a behind-the-scenes clip Kidman posted to Instagram on September 13, the duo is seen embracing, laughing, and dancing.
“That’s a wrap on #PracticalMagic2! Thank you to the cast & crew for all your magic,” she wrote. During filming, Bullock reflected on the personal connection she shares with her co-star. “It seems both of our mothers raised VERY independent women,” she told Vogue.
Kidman agreed, adding that the film’s feminist themes, long tied to society’s discomfort with strong, free-spirited women, are “all wrapped up in a pretty bow, with margaritas!”
Filmed in late summer, Kidman’s Vogue interview offered subtle glimpses into the personal transformation happening behind the scenes. The interview took place in August, about a month before she and husband Keith Urban announced their separation after nearly two decades of marriage.
“How many times do you have to be taught that you think you know where your life is going and then it isn’t going in that direction?” she said in response to how she feels in her 50s, a moment the interviewer noted that hinted at the couple’s looming split.
The actress, now 58, emphasized her tight-knit community in Nashville, where she’s leaned on her inner circle during challenging times. Among those closest to her are longtime friend Reese Witherspoon, who lives right across the street, as well as “a senior oncologist at Vanderbilt Hospital and another friend who runs a hospital.” “Ride-or-die friendships,” Kidman called them.
Between takes on the 'Practical Magic' sequel, Kidman took full advantage of her downtime. She recounted her summer adventures. “Going to Hyde Park and concerts, Glastonbury and Salisbury — so much summer fun — Evita, seeing theater, walking Hampstead Heath, swimming there,” she told Vogue.
“Went to Portugal, went to Greece, had my nieces and nephews around, lots of family: my sister, my best friend since I was 4, and her three children. A very tight group," she added.
Even with personal turmoil, she continued to pour herself into her work. “I put it in my work. That’s the beauty of what I do. There’s a place for some of this to explode, implode, process, discover,” she said.
The news of Kidman’s divorce broke on September 29, with official court filings following just a day later in Nashville. She cited irreconcilable differences and listed the date of separation as the date of filing. Along with the dissolution agreement, documents included a parenting plan for their daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.
The couple had reportedly been living apart earlier in the year. Their last public appearance together was at a soccer game in June. Fans also noticed that neither had posted about the other on social media in several months. Kidman’s last tribute to Urban came in June on their anniversary, while Urban last shared a photo of Kidman in May after receiving the Triple Crown Award at the ACM Awards.
