Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift have one of the world's most famous friendships. The two met as young teen idols, with Gomez building an acting and singing career through Disney, while Swift was releasing her first albums. In a new interview, Gomez opened up about her strong bond with Swift, revealing its unlikely origin.
Gomez was featured on Jake Shane's podcast, "Therapuss," where Gomez spoke about her relationship with Benny Blanco, her career, and her friendship with Swift.
"Taylor and I dated the Jonas Brothers," said Gomez. "I dated Nick, and she dated Joe. And it was cute, we were young. We all know and love each other now and it’s so cute. We didn't know what we were doing."
Gomez revealed that while the romantic relationships didn't last, the friendship that blossomed between her and Swift has stood the test of time. "She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other because it was really sweet," she said.
How Swift and Gomez first met
Gomez said that her friendship with Swift started “when it was the crazy curly Taylor and she had all these bracelets that went all the way up.” They became “best friends” after bonding “over the breakup, as girls do.”
“And then we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after and here we are now 16 years later,” she said.
Swift and Gomez first met in 2008, with Gomez revealing that she heard Swift's iconic "Love Song" before it was released to the public.“I believe ‘Love Story’ was the first song she had ever played me and it wasn’t released yet,” Gomez shared. “Yeah, I was in a hotel room and I remember it vividly, it was just one of those songs I instantly heard and thought this is one of the most beautiful songs ever.”
The statement left Shane in shock. “I know, it was so sweet," said Gomez. "She is a chameleon. She’s incredible.”
The pair have supported each other through the years, with Gomez supporting Swift's recent enormous career and milestones. Following Gomez's engagement to Blanco, Swift left a sweet comment on Gomez's Instagram post. "Yes I will be the flower girl," she wrote.
