Fans finally have answers about Jay-Z’s dramatic hair transformation, and the explanation is far more meaningful than many expected. In a new Father’s Day documentary, Beyoncé opened up about the emotional journey behind Jay-Z combing out the locs he had worn for more than eight years. The revelation comes weeks after the rap icon surprised fans by debuting a full Afro during his appearance with The Roots at the 2026 Roots Picnic in Philadelphia on May 30.
As speculation swirled online about the sudden change, Beyoncé addressed the questions directly. “Everyone wants to know the details of Jay’s hair transformation,” Beyoncé said at the start of the documentary.
Jay-Z’s New Afro Honors His Late Father
According to Beyoncé, the decision had been in the works for months and was deeply connected to Jay-Z’s late father, Adnis Reeves. “Jay told me a few months ago he was planning on combing out his locs for the Philly show with The Roots,” she shared.
The timing and location carried special significance. “He wanted to do this in honor of his father. His name was Adnis Reeves, and his favorite sports team was from Philly. His dad used to rock a fro, so he wanted to rock a fro in his honor.”
The documentary included archival images of Reeves as well as visuals connected to Philadelphia and the city's beloved basketball team, helping viewers understand the personal meaning behind the transformation.
The revelation puts an end to fan theories about why Jay-Z suddenly appeared with a completely different hairstyle after years of wearing long locs.
Blue Ivy Inspired Jay-Z To Grow His Locs
While the Afro honors Jay-Z’s father, Beyoncé revealed that the reason he started growing his hair in the first place was tied to their daughter Blue Ivy. “Now I wasn’t all the way convinced that he would be able to comb out his locs, considering he has such thick, long wicks and his hair had been locking for over eight years,” Beyoncé admitted.
She then shared the touching story behind the beginning of his loc journey. “I thought it was always beautiful that the real reason Jay grew out his hair was to show Blue that her hair was like this.”
According to Beyoncé, Blue Ivy was only five years old when she began struggling with confidence about her natural hair. “Our daughter was about five, and she wasn’t feeling very confident about her hair at that time,” Beyoncé explained. “When she told her father that, it inspired Jay to grow out his hair. We really wanted her to love and embrace every inch of her gorgeous curls.”
The revelation sheds light on a difficult period for the Carter family. At the time, public commentary surrounding Blue Ivy’s hair frequently dominated social media conversations, drawing criticism from many who felt the scrutiny was inappropriate.
For Jay-Z, growing his locs became a powerful way to reinforce a message of self-love and acceptance at home.
The Emotional Process Of Removing Eight Years Of Locs
While fans celebrated Jay-Z’s fresh look, Beyoncé admitted she wasn't entirely ready to say goodbye to the locs. “I was pretty obsessed with Jay’s locs. Honestly, I didn’t really want him to cut them,” she confessed.
The singer described the process as surprisingly emotional. “It’s a lot of memories. Locs can be like antennas connecting us to frequencies and energies. Hair grows, people grow, so the transformation can be emotional.”
Detangling eight years of locked hair required patience, time, and teamwork. Beyoncé explained that the family worked from the bottom of each loc upward toward the roots, which proved to be the most challenging part of the process.
They relied on detangling spray, deep conditioner, and moisturizing lotion to create enough slip to carefully separate the strands without causing unnecessary damage. Some treatments were even left in overnight to help loosen the hair.
The process eventually became something much bigger than a haircut. “It wasn’t just one person who removed his locs,” Beyoncé said. “It was a family affair.”
She also acknowledged the professionals and loved ones who helped make the transformation possible. “Shout out to the H-town loctician who helped start the process with us, and to every hand that contributed to this process,” she said.
Part of Jay’s transformation also included long-time family friend and Dominican hairstylist, Letisia Ravelo, known for being Blue Ivy’s hairdresser during Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour.
At the time, in a team of some of the industry’s top professionals, which included, Neal Farinah, Dominique Holloway, and Ziff Sistrunk, Letisia stood out as the only Latina, working on the project, which included the incredible responsibility of doing Blue Ivy’s hair, but she also played a vital role in styling some of the tour’s dancers, ensuring that everyone looked their absolute best.
In an exclusive interview with HOLA! USA, the talented hairstylist, who goes by Letty, opened up about the profound significance of representing her culture globally. Find here the complete interview.
