Queen Mary of Denmark made a compelling case for head-to-toe burgundy on Tuesday, October 6, arriving at Christiansborg Palace in a beautifully coordinated ensemble.

But tucked against the rich fabric of her jacket was a small accessory that deserved a closer look. A colorful vintage brooch with a history stretching back more than six decades.

The queen joined King Frederik X and Princess Benedikte for the opening of the Folketing, Denmark’s Parliament, an annual royal engagement marking the beginning of the parliamentary year. The ceremony traditionally takes place on the first Tuesday in October.

For the occasion, Mary chose a fitted burgundy jacket with a rounded neckline, long sleeves and a narrow matching belt. Its sculptural peplum gave the otherwise understated outfit its defining feature, flaring below the waist in angular folds that contrasted with the clean line of her skirt.

The jacket is a Roland Mouret design. Paired with a matching pencil skirt that fell below the knee, it created a refined silhouette with just enough movement and volume to keep the tailoring interesting.

Mary carried the color through to her accessories, choosing a wide burgundy headband, pointed pumps, and leather gloves in a similar shade. A structured black handbag with gold-tone hardware introduced a crisp contrast, while the coordinated pieces gave the outfit a polished, cohesive finish.

The most intriguing detail, however, was the brooch pinned high on her jacket, identified as a vintage Dior piece reportedly dating to 1964, with turquoise and red accents. Against the deep burgundy backdrop, its brighter colors became an immediate focal point.

The accessory has appeared in Mary’s wardrobe before. She wore it during the Danish royal couple’s state visit to France in April 2025, making this latest outing another example of how a distinctive accessory can bring fresh character to formal tailoring.

Her beauty look complemented the outfit’s soft structure. In the arrival photographs, Mary wore her brunette hair loose, with gently curled lengths falling behind her shoulders and the broad headband sweeping it away from her face.

Defined brows, softly emphasized eyes and a muted pink lip completed the look, while small stud earrings added a discreet touch of sparkle.

The sculpted waist, rich autumnal palette, and colorful vintage pin gave Mary’s ceremonial outfit plenty of personality. The brooch was small, but it supplied the detail that made the whole look memorable.
