Meghan Markle invited viewers into her kitchen on her Netflix special, With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration. During the show, she and chef Tom Colicchio cooked her mother Doria Ragland’s Christmas Eve gumbo. The laid-back segment quickly became a standout and led into a warm surprise.
It was during this scene that Prince Harry made an unexpected cameo appearance on his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s Netflix holiday special.
The Duke of Sussex, 41, crashed onto the set of With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration as she and Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio cooked her 69-year-old mom Doria Ragland’s beloved Christmas Eve gumbo.
Whilst Meghan, 44, stirred the ingredients in the pot that sat on the stove, Harry walked into shot and said, “Hi, guys,” as he gently leaned in to give his wife a smooch.
Laughing as she introduced Harry to Tom, the Duchess said, “I was like, there’s somebody buzzing around! This is my husband." Meghan, who has son Prince Archie, six, and daughter Princess Lilibet, four, with Harry, explained to her spouse that she and Tom were knocking up Doria’s gumbo.
However, Harry could already tell what it was that they were making by the scent of the heavily seasoned Louisiana stew. The Duke was not a fan of the “anti-salad” that Tom, 63, was putting together because it included ingredients such as beets, black olives, fennel, anchovies and pickled vegetables that Harry hates.
The youngest son of King Charles, 77, and his late ex-wife, Diana, Princess of Wales, came on the show because he loves his mother-in-law’s gumbo. Harry said, “You must have known that I was coming. And gumbo for me is like one of my favorites, especially her mom’s. But before the fish goes in.”vMeghan added: “[Doria] always saves a little portion on the side for him.”
However, Harry was not too keen on Meghan’s take on Doria’s gumbo because it was too spicy. “I can feel it puncturing through the top of my head! I’m not so sure it’s as good as your mom’s, but it’s certainly close.”
As she burst into laughter, Meghan said: “What?! Oh my gosh. Well, my mom will love you for that. You know what? What a good thing to say for your mother-in-law.”
