Prince Sverre Magnus is single again. Just one day before his 20th birthday on December 3rd, it was revealed that the son of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway had broken up with his long-term girlfriend, Amalie Giæver Macleod.

Macleod, 19, was introduced as Sverre's girlfriend at Princess Märtha Louise’s wedding and developed a tight relationship with the royal family, going on vacations with King Harald and Queen Sonja aboard the royal yacht.

The news was broken by the Norwegian publication Se og Hør, which featured the news on its cover. Over the past years, Macleod had been so well integrated into the Royal Family that she was even spotted backstage at some of Princess Mette-Marit’s literature-related events, a subject that Macleod was passionate about.

Macleod made her official entrance into the royal world by attending as Sverre's date to Princess Märtha Louise and Durek Verrett’s wedding. The event was attended by all manner of notorious figures, including  King Harald and Queen Sonja. Her presence sparked some criticism when it became known that she was a classmate of Sverre’s who was still only 17, with some critics voicing concern about her being exposed to public attention when she was underage.

Although official information about Prince Sverre is minimal, his mother did confirm that after finishing secondary school, he moved to the Norwegian city of Trondheim, where he's working. It was later learned, through Macleod's LinkedIn, that she also worked in the city, at the art galleries Galleri SG and Dropsfabrikken.

Over the summer, Macleod received an invitation to spend her holidays with King Harald and Queen Sonja, joining in on a family tradition where they vacation aboard the Royal Yacht with their closest family members. At the start of the academic year, the couple moved to Milan when Macleod was accepted into the prestigious Bocconi University, where notorious figures like Casiraghi, Beatrice Borromeo, and more acquired degrees.

When did things go wrong?

Se og Hør reports that while the couple moved to Milan together, they lived in separate homes. The Royal House clarified at the time that Sverre would continue pursuing his passion for photography and audiovisual production, with him continuing to work under the company that he founded.

Signs of trouble surfaced a few weeks ago, in mid-November, when Crown Prince Haakon flew to Milan to attend the Italy–Norway football match at San Siro. The match was historic, with Norway qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1998. Sverre Magnus was photographed in the VIP box, alongside the future king, but Macleod was not in attendance.
