Queen Máxima and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands are preparing for a momentous occasion. The royal couple kicked off December with a State Visit to Suriname, their first since the country became independent from the Netherlands in 1975. Just a week after traveling to Indonesia as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance, the Queen has crossed the Atlantic once more. Upon arriving at their new destination, the Queen surprised the world with a look that felt familiar and difficult to place — until we realized half of it was brand new.
A faux dress
True to her innovative style that never abandons royal elegance, Máxima chose a look rooted in neutral tones, keeping it fun and exciting with its unique details. First is the fabric: a rustic jacquard decorated with geometric motifs. On first look, the look appears to be a dress — but it’s actually two separate pieces. Instead of being a dress, the look is made up of a top and a skirt.
Máxima has worn the skirt on previous occasions, having owned it for two years. The piece is a flattering high-waisted, midi-length piece with a wide matching belt that defines the waist. It's designed by Natan, one of Maxima's favorite labels for both everyday and special occasions.
The dress seems to be one of Maxima's go-to designs for intercontinental trips: she debuted the skirt in Brazil in 2023. She brought it to Colombia the following year, and now has taken it out again for her trip to Suriname.
What sets this appearance apart from the previous occasions is that she paired it with the matching top — a rare design that's no longer on sale. Until now, Maxima had styled the skirt with white blouses for contrast, letting it shine on its own.
This time, she opted for the full set, creating the visual effect of a dress. In doing so, Máxima reinforces the versatility of coordinated sets, which have been trending in recent years and have long been a staple of her closet, resulting in countless outfit combinations.
The top in question is the Tila model, featuring a wide strap and gathered neckline that creates a faux halter effect. She completed her Suriname arrival look with black ankle-strap sandals with a block heel, showing off a burgundy pedicure that matched her fingernails. She styled her hair in a low bun with a side part and accessorized with oversized white floral earrings.
