It’s the moment everyone was waiting for, and tradition has been honored. Isabella of Denmark, the second child of King Frederik and Queen Mary, appears in her first official photos wearing formal attire and a tiara for the very first time, a piece she received on her 18th birthday this Monday. These new images cap off two days of spectacular celebrations marking her entry into adulthood as the second in line to the throne.

Three portraits of the Princess have been released, taken in the Grand Hall of Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg. The photos were shot by Steen Evald, a photographer who has captured the Danish Royal Family on many occasions. The Princess is wearing a flattering satin gown in a vibrant orange shade, featuring draping around the bodice and neckline.

There was some anticipation around when Isabella would wear her first tiara. In the Danish Court, it's tradition for princesses to receive a family tiara from their parents when they turn 18. It had been over 60 years since a Danish royal was gifted one— the last was Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, Isabella’s great-aunt, who was born a Danish princess.

Although since January 14, 2024, when Frederik X became King, Isabella, along with her younger siblings Vincent and Josephine, has been a member of the Order of the Elephant, the actual insignia is only awarded on the day the recipient reaches adulthood. This honor is the oldest and most prestigious order of chivalry in Denmark, with origins dating back to the 15th century. It is mainly given to royals and heads of state.

Since 1693, the insignia has featured a gold elephant with a tower, covered in white enamel and set with diamonds. It includes the order’s collar decorated with elephants and towers, a light blue sash, and a star worn on the chest. Christian virtues have long been associated with the elephant, a classical symbol of war. While it is typically worn with the sash, on certain formal occasions, such as the New Year’s Gala on January 1, it is worn with the full ceremonial collar.

The Order of the Elephant awarded to Princess Isabella underwent a small restoration for the occasion. The King's monogram was repainted, as the insignia always bears the monogram of the reigning monarch at the time it’s granted. In addition, the Princess will have her own personal coat of arms painted, which, once completed, will be hung in the Knights' Chapel at Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød.
