Making the decision to get a pet can be tough, but once you have your furry friend, the next hard call is what to name them. With entertainers like Trisha Paytas naming their son Aquaman, there are no limits when it comes to human names.  But the most popular pet names are actually pretty tame.

TrustedHousesitters just dropped its annual Pet Name Study, analyzing nearly 100,000 dogs and cats across the U.S., and the results prove that humans are all about trends, pop culture, and fandoms when it comes to their pet names.

And, there are a lot of crossovers. Across the nation, the top five names for both dogs and cats are Luna, Lucy, Bella, Charlie, and Daisy. Check out the full list below

Why are so many animals named Luna?

Luna takes the crown in 21 states, while Lucy rules in nine. Luna is proving to be a dominating name as it was also the most common name in 2024, and in 2023, it was the most popular female dog name. Luna has actually been sitting at the top of cat names since 2021. As for why? It's the name of the cat in Sailor Moon, it means moon in Spanish, and it's a popular Harry Potter character.

Other interesting things it found were that the top five food names were: Olive, Pepper, Ginger, Mochi, and Honey. The top six cities were: Aspen, Rio, Phoenix, London, and Dallas. And Movie lovers are also keeping the classics alive with Rocky (Rocky), Marley (Marley & Me), Simba (The Lion King), Bruno (Encanto), Remy (Ratatouille), Leia (Star Wars), Gizmo (Gremlins), and Thor (Marvel Cinematic Universe) being the ten most popular movie character names.

The rising stars: pets of pop culture

This year’s breakout names are straight out of pop culture. According to TrustedHousekeepers, Wednesday soared 1,400% thanks to Jenna Ortega and Netflix. Percy climbed 570% with the Percy Jackson reboot. Goose flew up 309% after Top Gun: Maverick. TikTok’s obsession with Fourth Wing gave us a 318% rise in Violet and a 320% boost in Onyx. And Sarah J. Maas fans pushed Feyre, Azriel, and Rowan onto the charts for the first time.
