As we prepare for the summer and the hot weather, you're likely preparing for an influx of flies and pesky little bugs. And while there are a few things you can do when out on the street, it is possible to control these bugs when in the comfort of your home. Here's what you should know about plants and herbs that can help you keep your house free of pests:

Flies and bugs are more common during the summer due to the favorable weather conditions. Insects are cold-blooded and, in the summer, their bodies' temperature rise, resulting in them being more active and in trying to find cooler spots, like your home and your water pipes. This results in them laying their eggs more often, proliferating themselves, and leaving you feeling very annoyed.

Some basic tips that can limit your exposure to flies include keeping the kitchen as clean as possible, not allowing your dirty dishes to stack up, and sealing your garbage tightly. Clean up food remainders and crumbs as soon as possible and throw away your garbage regularly.

If you want to add some extra protective measures, here are some plants you should keep on hand:

Basil

Basil is a very useful herb in the kitchen, being one of the most delicious and malleable herbs. But it's also a good option for keeping flies away due to its strong aromatic properties.

Bay laurel

This plant is known for repelling moths, flies, and cockroaches, so it's a really good one to have when the weather gets warm and all sorts of pests are trying to keep warm.

Rosemary

Rosemary is another common herb for cooking. It's also very hardy, being an easy one to maintain if you plant it.

Marigolds

Marigolds are common rabbit repellents in gardens and are also pretty effective in keeping mosquitoes and flies away.

Sage

Sage needs low humidity to grow, making it a useful plant for people who may occasionally forget to water their plants.

Catnip

Catnip is known for its effect on felines, lulling them and making them feel sleepy, but it's also an effective repellent of mosquitoes, flies, and deer ticks.

Lavender

Lastly, lavender's strong scent is a repellent to animals like bugs like moths, mosquitoes, fleas, and flies.
