Swelling caused by an accumulation of fluid in your body’s tissues - known as edema - usually occurs in the feet, ankles and legs, but it can involve your entire body. If you suffer from it you should definitely consult a doctor, as there can be serious causes including heart, kidney or liver disease. But once those have been ruled out, there are some home remedies worth trying.

Drink more water

When you’re trying to reduce swelling due to fluid retention, you may be tempted to reduce the amount of water you drink. But in fact, you should drink plenty of water throughout the day. This facilitates the elimination of toxins from the body, including the substances that cause fluid retention.

Eat less salt

Avoid eating salt, especially sodium. As well as cutting it out of cooking and not adding it at table, you should be aware that processed food like ready made meals usually contains large amounts. If you feel your food is bland without it, season with herbs and spices.

Physical activity is a great ally in reducing fluid retention. Aerobic exercise that involves the whole body is best, so walk, jog, run, swim, or cycle.
