Joanna Vargas has spent 20 years perfecting what beauty calls a glow. In that time, the celebrity esthetician has taken a hands-on practice that began with a Manhattan spa and turned it into a skincare line, a bicoastal business and a name trusted by clients including Rachel Brosnahan, Gwendoline Christie, Naomi Watts and Maggie Gyllenhaal

Vargas once imagined a life behind a camera. At the University of Chicago, she created her own interdisciplinary degree combining photography and women’s studies before moving to New York and eventually finding her way into skincare. She trained at the Christine Valmy International School for Esthetics, worked at an organic day spa and later in a celebrity dermatologist’s office, where she gained experience with active ingredients and anti-aging treatments.

By 2006, she was ready to open a spa of her own in New York. Joanna Vargas Skincare followed in 2011, giving clients a way to bring part of her treatment philosophy home. Los Angeles came next, and today the company has spas in New York, Brooklyn and West Hollywood.

Her approach has stayed remarkably consistent. Vargas pairs plant-based skincare with technologies including LED, microcurrent, microdermabrasion and oxygen treatments, but what happens outside the treatment room matters just as much. Food, sleep, stress and daily habits all have a place in her idea of healthy skin. She explored that philosophy in her 2020 book, Glow From Within, the same year her Magic Glow Wand won an Allure Best of Beauty Award.

The recognition continued in 2025, when Vargas received the Outstanding Achievement in Aesthetics Award at the Daytime Beauty Awards, presented by Jenna Elfman and Ashley Tisdale. She called it one of the highlights of her career. That September, American Airlines added Joanna Vargas skincare products to select premium-cabin amenity kits, bringing her hand and body lotion and moisturizing lip balm to travelers on international and transcontinental flights.

Twenty years into the business, Vargas is still part of the conversation about where beauty is going next. In January 2026, she joined Sinclair Insight’s Beauty in Balance, a discussion about changing beauty standards, education, treatments and the client experience.

For Vargas, however, the foundation has never depended on the newest beauty obsession. The technology may change, and her products may travel farther, but her work continues to come back to the same place: caring for skin consistently, understanding what it needs, and making the ritual part of everyday life.

Twenty years later, Vargas is still defining glow on her own terms.
