Gloria Estefan is perhaps the greatest success story of the Cuban exodus. She came to America when she was two years old, building a life in the United States that led her to becoming one of the world’s leading musical artists and a proud representative of Cuban music and heritage.

Estefan has been based in South Florida all through her life, something that she and her family love and need. “It’s as close as we can be to our roots, and still live in this magnificent country with its freedom and its beauty,” she said in an interview with The Washington Post.

When discussing her dynamic with Emilio Estefan, her partner of over 40 years, she says that the two balance eachother out. While Emilio loves the creative aspect of things, she’s more into the details and finances. “We love real estate. We love tangibles. We have an immigrant mentality.”

Estefan achieved fame young in life, with Miami Sound Machine, a band that produced hits such as “Conga” and “The Rhythm is Gonna Get You.”

As a solo artist, she amassed even more success, crossing over into English music with hits like “ Don’t Want to Lose You.”

Her life has inspired a Broadway musical titled “On Your Feet!” She’s won three Grammy Awards and has been nominated for 15. Aside from all of the tangible trophies and achievements, Estefan’s imprint goes beyond that. Her music and her story have become a guiding light for millions of Cubans, immigrants, and Latinos of all origins.
