It's awards season, and the Academy Awards are already making history. Oscar-nominated actor Danielle Brooks and actor Lewis Pullman announced the 98th Oscars nominations on Thursday, January 22, 2026, live from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, and there are some surprises.

Leading the pack with nominations is Ryan Coogler's vampire thriller Sinners. The Black talent-led film made history with 16 nominations, becoming the most-nominated film in Oscars history. The previous record of 14 was held by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. Per Variety, the film earned nominations for 10 Black artists, tying the record for the most Black nominees produced by a single movie in Oscars history.

Unfortunately, Latino representation is lacking, and there are only 2 actors nominated (Benicio del Toro and Wagner Moura), and no Latinas. Moura is, however, making history as the first Brazilian ever nominated at the awards. While Guillermo del Toro was not nominated for Best Director, Frankenstein did receive a Best Picture nomination.

Emma Stone, 37, also broke a record, becoming the youngest woman in Oscar history to earn seven total nominations. It was previously held by Meryl Streep, going back to 1988 when she was 38. Meanwhile, Wicked: For Good earned no nominations.

A total of 24 categories will be awarded at this year’s ceremony, with final voting running from Thursday, February 26, 2026, to Thursday, March 5, 2026. The 98th Oscars will take place Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood (live on ABC, streaming live on Hulu, and airing in 200+ territories).
