Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have a new project coming up. The team of filmmakers will be releasing their newest collaboration on Netflix, titled "The Rip," marking at least the 10th time that the two have collaborated on different film projects.
Netflix has shared the first trailer for "The Rip," directed and written by Joe Carnahan, and starring an all-star cast made up of Steven Yeun, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Teyana Taylor.
The film follows a group of Miami cops, led by Dane Dumars (Damon) and his partner JD Byrne (Affleck), as they discover millions of dollars in cash. The finding makes tensions rise within the team as they all try to figure out what they want to do with the money quickly and in close quarters.
“[They] can’t leave, which makes them targets for a bunch of bad guys,” said Carnahan to Netflix's TUDUM. “And now they have to count the money, not knowing necessarily who to trust, including one another.”
What is the movie about?
The official logline of "The Rip" reads as follows: "Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on."
Damon and Affleck teased the project further in conversations with TUDUM, explaining why the setup poses such intriguing and dramatic questions. “In Miami, you have to count the money on-site, so that everybody knows how much is there,” said Damon.
“It begs the question: what do you do when faced with this massive temptation?” said Affleck. "What does that mean? What’s it like to see that up close? And then also, who do you trust?”
Damon shares more thoughts that up the stakes of the story. “They know that it’s almost certainly cartel money that belongs to very dangerous people who are probably going to come get it,” he said. “They’re on the clock, and they have to start thinking of defending where they are because they can’t just leave.”
When is it coming out?
"The Rip" premieres on Netflix on January 16 and marks Damon and Affleck's newest project under their production company, United Artists.
In past years, the company has produced numerous films, including "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and "Unstoppable," led by Jennifer Lopez, and other projects like "Air," led by Damon and Affleck themselves.
