The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards delivered a heartwarming moment for pop fans everywhere as Ariana Grande presented the Video Vanguard Award to none other than her lifelong idol and recent collaborator, Mariah Carey.
Dressed in a shimmering black sequin gown, Ariana took to the stage, bowing to the pop legend before handing over the honor. “Thank you, Ari. You’re the cutest, I love you, I’m so grateful for you, and I’m beyond proud of everything you’ve achieved, girl.” Mariah said, visibly emotional during the tribute.
Mariah, looking radiant in a gold ensemble, received the special recognition, with many commenting on the interaction between the pair. The two singers embraced, smiled, and walked off stage arm-in-arm.
For Mariah Carey, this marked her first-ever MTV VMAs recognition, a long-overdue moment for a career that has influenced countless artists, Ariana included. Her performance of some of her iconic hits reminded the audience why she’s earned the title of Queen of Pop and R&B.
And for Ariana, it was a full-circle dream, honoring the woman who helped shape her artistry and sharing the stage not as a fan, but as a collaborator and equal.
They were spotted sharing a casual conversation backstage, reminding fans of their mutual respect and undeniable talent. While this VMAs moment marks their first major award show appearance together, Ariana and Mariah's friendship and professional relationship go back several years.
The duo first teamed up in 2020 for a holiday remix of “Oh Santa!” and most recently, in early 2024, the two artists reunited for the official remix of Ariana’s single 'Yes, And?,' featured on the deluxe version of her album 'Eternal Sunshine.'
Mariah lent her signature whistle notes and took on a solo verse. In an interview with People, she called working with Ariana a “fantasy" come to life, adding, “She’s super talented, and working together was really fun... I think she’s amazing.”
Ariana has also made her admiration known. Earlier this year, she wore a dress featuring Mariah's face, to which Mariah replied on Instagram, “She ate.”
On social media, Ariana shared a playful video of the remix release featuring both singers. “I love you so much @mariahcarey yes, and? remix out now,” Ariana wrote in the caption. Carey responded, “Love you Ari!!! thank you for having me on this record.”
