This year's US Open is off to a great start. The tournament, which is one of the oldest and most storied tournaments in tennis, kicked off last week, continuing the story of our favorite tennis players. While many have placed their bets on this year's men's and women's championship winners, part of the excitement of the tournament is to get to know players you know little about.
This year, there's an exciting batch of Latin talent on the court, including some players who have made some exciting upsets. Scroll down to learn more about the Latinos making their mark at this year's US Open:
Mexico
Mexico has broken records already. Renata Zarazua took out Madison Keys, one of the tournament's favorites, in her first match. It's a historic moment for Mexico, marking the first time in three decades that a Mexican player defeats a seeded contender at a Grand Slam.
It's also a significant moment for Zarazua, with the match representing the most important win of her career.
Argentina
Argentina has a great tennis program, with various players like Francisco Cerundolo and Federico Gomez showing off their skills in the tournament's first round. Cerundolo is currently playing the Swiss player Leandro Riedi.
Colombia
Emiliana Arango was one of the most exciting Latin players at this year's tournament. Sadly, she was unlucky and played her first match against Iga Swiatek, the current Wimbledon champion and the number 2 tennis player in the world per WTA Rankings. She lost in two sets.
The Colombian-American player Julieta Pareja is the youngest player in the tournament, at 16 years old. She's playing doubles against China today.
Spain
In addition to Latino players, Spain has also made an impact in the US Open, having one of the most exciting tennis programs in the world. Carlos Alcaraz, who won the US Open in 2022 and became the youngest Grand Slam winner in years at the age of 19. He is one of this year's favorites.
