Music has a powerful way of connecting generations, and Selena Gomez’s latest track, 'Ojos Tristes,' featuring The Marías, is the perfect example of this phenomenon. A modern reimagining of Jeanette’s 1981 Spanish-language ballad 'El Muchacho de los Ojos Tristes.'

This cover has sparked a wave of nostalgia for the older generation while capturing the hearts of younger listeners who heard the original from their parents.

As part of Selena's new album 'I Said I Love You First,' in collaboration with her soon-to-be husband Benny Blanco, 'Ojos Tristes' blends contemporary indie-pop sounds with the emotional essence of the 80s ballad, with a fresh, dreamy twist.

The song continues to go viral on social media, including TikTok, where many Latinos are sharing their connection to the song, and the nostalgia in their parents after showing them the new version of the track.

Featuring María Zardoya’s from the fan-favorite band, her ethereal vocals mixed with Selena's signature voice, is one of the most listened songs from her Latin fanbase, evoking themes of heartbreak and longing, and making the song feel timeless.

Selena previously explained that she always wanted to include a Spanish-language song in her albums, and 'Ojos Tristes' felt like the perfect fit. The Marías, whose dreamy, indie-pop sound has resonated with a growing fan base, especially after joining Billie Eilish on tour, were the perfect feature on the song.

Meanwhile, Jeanette has described the new version as "gorgeous," giving the two musicians her blessing and adding to the revival of the 80s classic.

“I’ll tell you the truth: It’s beautiful,” she told Rolling Stone during her latest interview. “I heard just a snippet this morning, but have now listened to the whole thing just before speaking to you," the singer added.

“It’s a classic cover but she has added a modern twist to it while respecting the essence of the original song,” she continued. “I think they’ve done such a gorgeous job. It’s lovely.”
