An Idaho potato worker and a father of two is the latest viral TikTok star

Nathan Apodaca’s heartfelt video has gotten a lot of attention on the app.

TikTok has taken the Gen Z generation by storm. It seems that once upon a time people got discovered on Vine or YouTube, yet now it seems that TikTok is the latest app to discover fresh talent. And sometimes the most unexpected people doing unusual things go viral. That’s exactly what happened to 37-year-old father of two, Nathan Apodaca. Apodaca’s video not only got the attention of 35 million viewers on TikTok, but it also helped a 1960s British Band see a soar in sales over a particular song.

Apodaca has been an Idaho potato worker for nearly two decades, according to NPR. He first joined the popular Gen Z app at the request of his teenage daughter and has been making TikToks for about two years now.

For some backstory on how this famous video came about was one-morning last month, Apodaca’s truck which has already 320,000 miles had broken down on a highway in Idaho Falls, Idaho which was about two miles from the warehouse where the 37-year-old works, according to NPR.

At the time when the truck broke down, Apodaca had a skateboard in his truck and a bottle of Ocean Spray’s Cran-Raspberry juice. “I was just sitting there, and I‘m like, ‘OK, I’m not gonna sit here and wait for nobody to pull some jumper cables,’ ” Apodaca told NPR. ” ’I’m not gonna flag anyone down.’ So I grab my juice, grab my longboard, started heading to work.”

Apodaca showed off his skateboarding talents by skating down a highway while taking a sip from his cranberry juice. While he was skating, the father of two told NPR that he turned on his TikTok app and created the now-viral video. The song of choice for Apodaca to skate to was the 1977 hit song, “Dreams,” by Fleetwood Mac.

“When I heard ‘Dreams,’ that’s when I figured, ’OK, this is it,’ ” said Apodaca in the NPR interview. The funny thing is that once the views on the video really took off, “Dreams” catapulted back on the charts, tripling in sales. The song also had its best week ever on streaming platforms.

Apodaca explained to NPR why he only lip sang part of the famous song in his TikTok. “I couldn‘t hear nothing when I was looking around for the cars, because the wind was in my ears. So when I turned and the wind cut out is when I caught the part where she gets the vocals,” he said.

Thinking nothing of it, after posting the video, it garnered around 100,000 views within the first hour of it being posted. Now, it has over 35 million views and over 100,000 tribute videos have been made on TikTok. Since the video has been posted, fans have made donations to the father of two and Ocean Spray gifted him a new red truck packed with jugs of cranberry juice, according to NPR.
