One of the most intense scenes in Tom Cruise's career apparently had a much lighter atmosphere behind the cameras. More than three decades after the release of 'A Few Good Men,' actor Kevin Pollak is revisiting a hilarious moment involving Cruise and Jack Nicholson that ended with an unexpected punch.
During a recent appearance on Steve Kmetko's 'Still Here Hollywood' podcast, Pollak, who starred alongside the two Hollywood legends in the 1992 legal drama, recalled how Nicholson deliberately tried to distract Cruise while filming their famous courtroom confrontation.
The scene, which features Cruise's Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee demanding the truth from Nicholson's Colonel Nathan Jessup, has become one of the most recognizable moments in movie history. But according to Pollak, Nicholson had a mischievous way of keeping his co-star on his toes.
What really happened between Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson?
Pollak explained that Nicholson was positioned close to the camera during a particularly intense take, giving Cruise a rather unusual sight as he delivered his lines.
"Jack is doing this, making the most ridiculous clown face you've ever seen," Pollak recalled, demonstrating the actor's exaggerated expression during the podcast. Despite Nicholson's attempts to make him laugh, Cruise remained focused and completed the scene without breaking character.
"And Tom stayed in the pocket and finished the scene and then punched Jack Nicholson in the shoulder," Pollak said, adding that both actors burst into laughter afterward.
The playful exchange offers a surprising glimpse into the dynamic between the two stars, whose heated on-screen confrontation became a defining moment of the Oscar-nominated film.
Tom Cruise previously revealed what it was like working with Jack Nicholson
Interestingly, Cruise has also spoken about his unforgettable experience filming the courtroom sequence with Nicholson.
During a 2025 conversation with the British Film Institute, the 'Mission: Impossible' star recalled how word spread around Hollywood that the two actors were preparing to shoot their dramatic confrontation.
"I couldn't wait to do that scene with him," Cruise said, explaining that people from across the industry gathered at Culver Studios to watch them perform.
The actor described Nicholson as an exceptionally generous scene partner who remained engaged even when the camera wasn't focused on him. "Jack is very much an actor's actor, and was there off-camera the whole time, very giving and gracious," Cruise recalled.
His comments paint a picture of mutual admiration between the two performers, making Pollak's latest anecdote even more entertaining.
The lasting legacy of 'A Few Good Men'
Directed by Rob Reiner and written by Aaron Sorkin, 'A Few Good Men' follows a military lawyer defending two Marines accused of killing a fellow serviceman.
The film also stars Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon and Kiefer Sutherland and earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Nicholson.
Pollak previously reflected on the film's surprisingly relaxed working environment, recalling a lesson he learned from Reiner about the importance of enjoying the creative process, even while making an intense courtroom drama.
Decades later, the story of Nicholson's playful antics and Cruise's unexpected response reveals a side of their legendary collaboration that audiences never saw on screen.
