Long before Lourdes Leon walked a runway or sang a song, she was making headlines. On the day she was born in October 1996, news helicopters circled the hospital, hoping to catch a glimpse of Madonna's first-born daughter. Three decades later, the singer is finally telling the story from the inside.

Lourdes turned 30 on Wednesday, and Madonna celebrated on Instagram with a carousel of nostalgic photos. She also shared one of her most personal captions. “Happy Birthday My Lolita! You came to me in a Dream. A fever dream. A Dream called Life. If I tried to write it all down, I would cry a river of tears.”

She took fans into the delivery room, writing: “Your chin was tilted up in my birth canal, you were looking for the stars you were stuck. After 18 hours of labor and your heartbeat slowing down, an emergency C-section was the only option."

“Did I mention the helicopters and news crews swirling above our heads on the top floor of the hospital in East LA?” she continued. "Your're birth was dramatic. Like our lives.”

“Our connection - it is Biblical. When I ask God to explain it to me He tells me- Look in the mirror!” Madonna wrote. “We are Two side sides of the same coin. If what we risk reveals what we value then I would risk it all on you.”

She closed with a blessing that longtime fans will recognize. “Never forget who you are- Little Star, shining brighter than all the stars in the sky. Never forget how to Dream Butterfly. Never forget where you come from. From Love.” Madonna has used the term “Little Star” to refer to her daughter for years. It's the title of one of her songs from the 1998 album "Ray of Light."

Fans flooded the comments, and so did a few famous faces, including Katy Perry and Lindsay Lohan. It also received a sweet message from Lourdes herself, who wrote, “You’re the one I think about all day. I love you."

Lourdes is Madonna’s eldest child. She shares her with Carlos Leon.

Over the years, Lourdes has been open about the difficulties of being raised as the daughter of one of the world's most famous pop stars. In a 2021 conversation with actress Debi Mazar for Interview Magazine, Lourdes explained she paid for her own college tuition and apartment as soon as she left high school. “We don’t get any handouts in my family. Obviously, I grew up with extreme privilege. There’s no denying that. But I think my mom saw all these other kids of famous people, and she was like, ‘My kids are not going to be like this,’” she said.

Lourdes also shed light on Madonna's parenting style and approach to life. “Also, I feel like if your parents pay for things, then it gives them leverage over you. My mom is such a control freak, and she has controlled me my whole life. I needed to be completely independent from her as soon as I graduated high school.”

Thirty years after a birth that was as dramatic as their lives, Lourdes and Madonna seem to have landed in the right spot, with their relationship moving beyond its hurdles and centering wholly on love.
