Joe Manganiello is opening up about a deeply personal struggle that remained hidden from the public for years.
The 'Magic Mike' actor has announced his upcoming memoir, 'Bloodlines,' revealing for the first time the details of a devastating seven-year health battle that nearly cost him his life.
The book, scheduled for release on October 13, chronicles a mysterious series of autoimmune-related illnesses that attacked multiple parts of his body while he continued working in Hollywood.
According to the official synopsis, Manganiello's health began to deteriorate unexpectedly at a time when his career was thriving and his personal life appeared to be flourishing.
"Joe Manganiello seemed to have it all: a soaring career, a new marriage, and what many considered, the best physique in Hollywood," the synopsis reads. "Then, without warning, his body began to fail him."
The illnesses reportedly affected his skin, eyes, lungs, thyroid, and digestive system, triggering years of chronic pain and medical uncertainty.
Doctors struggled to explain what was happening, leaving the actor searching for answers as his condition worsened.
"A cascade of autoimmune-related illnesses attacked his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs, and digestive system, plunging him into a seven-year battle," the synopsis continued, "plagued by chronic pain, a life-saving organ amputation, existential crisis and a prolonged fight for survival that left doctors with few answers and no clear explanation."
Speaking to People, Manganiello described the period as "the most brutally difficult time in my life," adding that it was "one I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy."
As traditional medical avenues failed to provide clear explanations, the True Blood star embarked on a deeply personal journey that stretched far beyond doctors' offices and hospitals.
According to the publisher, Simon & Schuster, his search led him toward spirituality, ancestral history, and unconventional healing practices.
The memoir recounts his experiences consulting shamans, exploring pagan rituals, studying ancient myths, and examining long-forgotten family records in an effort to understand both his illness and himself.
That search eventually connected him to his Armenian roots and the stories of family members who survived the Armenian genocide.
"A search that led him deep into his own bloodline," the synopsis states, "to a survivor of the Armenian genocide, to ancestors shaped by violence and displacement and the hidden patterns shared by others living with chronic illness."
Manganiello says he hopes sharing his experience will offer comfort to others facing difficult medical journeys of their own.
"I hope that what I went through on this journey," he said, "can give readers hope that answers and healing may lie for them on the other side of whatever they are fighting through."
Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara's divorce:
While the memoir's official description focuses on his health crisis, spiritual awakening, and family history, the timeline of the ordeal has generated significant interest because it overlapped with nearly all of his marriage to Sofía Vergara.
Manganiello and Vergara married in 2015 and finalized their divorce in 2024.
Given that the actor's health battle lasted seven years, he was privately navigating the near-fatal medical crisis through much of their relationship while maintaining a highly visible public image.
Although the synopsis does not specifically mention Vergara, Bloodlines is being described as a searching examination of identity, survival, and the truths people carry beneath the surface.
Readers will have to wait until its October release to learn how extensively Manganiello addresses the impact the illness may have had on his personal life.
