Malia Obama was photographed heading to a neighborhood nail salon in Los Angeles during a low-key outing, giving an understated, model-off-duty aesthetic that has become part of her signature.
Dressed in an easy monochrome look, Malia wore a fitted dark tank paired with ultra-baggy low-rise jeans. She finished the look with simple flip-flops and a slouchy shoulder bag.
She wore her softly tousled copper-toned hair down.
Reports surrounding the sighting noted she was headed to a nail appointment.
A Style that Keeps Resonating
Malia’s fashion formula is always consistent. Michelle and Barack Obama’s eldest child rarely appears overstyled, yet her looks tap into what younger fashion audiences are embracing, including oversized proportions, minimal basics, vintage-coded denim, and quietly cool accessories.
The wide-leg jeans and minimalist tank top echoed the continued rise of pared-back 1990s and Y2K-inspired dressing. The flip-flops, while controversial, also show a revived sandal trend that fashion insiders are expected to revisit this summer. In addition, her oversized tote adds to the practical and unfussy mood.
The Beauty Errand Trend
Most celebrities would prefer to have the nail technicians meet at their homes, but now celebrity beauty maintenance outings have become another way to showcase street style away from the performative stage.
Malia Obama’s Expanding Creative Era
While her personal style draws attention, fashion is not the only thing putting Malia in headlines. The 27-year-old is building her identity in filmmaking, including her Sundance debut with “The Heart” and also "Swarm" (2023) and "West Wing Week" (2010).
Malia, who never uses her last name in films, is “trying to make her way.” According to her mom, who spoke about the switch on one episode of Kate Hudson’s Sibling Revelry podcast, she said: “It is very important for my kids to feel like they’ve earned what they are getting in the world, and they don’t want people to assume that they don’t work hard, that they’re just naturally, just handed things,” Michelle told Hudson. “They’re very sensitive to that—they want to be their own people.”
In November 2024, Malia and her younger sister, Sasha Obama, moved to Los Angeles, distancing themselves from their famous parents. The former President also shared how now both sisters are having more media attention compared to their time at the White House. “Now, as they’ve gotten older, there’s been some paparazzi stuff going on, and it drives them nuts, you know, because their attitude is, ‘We’re not looking for all that.’ So they’re grounded,” he said per The Hollywood Reporter.
