Rihanna has always had her mother-in-law in her corner. A$AP Rocky and Rihanna have one of the most stable relationships in the world of entertainment, with the two happily partnered up, having welcomed three kids during their time together. In a new interview, Rocky revealed that his mom always wanted him to date Rihanna, even when he was dating other people.
In an appearance on The New York Times podcast, Rocky talked about the influence of different people in his life. "A woman will change your whole life. Especially if it's your companion," he said.
He then addressed Rihanna more specifically, sharing a bit of their backstory, including the fact that they were friends years before they started dating. "I got with a very special woman," he said. "It was just like... we were on the same page. Born in the same year. My dad is from her country. When I go back, I get to see both sides of my family. It's so many similarities, it's just funny."
"She was always my boo."
He revealed that his mom was always on team Rihanna, even when he was dating other women. "My mother used to say s-t like... 'I know you like this girl you're with right now,' I ain't gonna say no names! 'but I want you with Riri,'" he said, prompting laughter from the podcast hosts. "'That girl don't even want me like that. Be cool, mom. That's just my friend. Chill,'" he'd say.
"Mothers know best," he continued. "I'm thankful that [Rihanna] was put in my life at that time because any time prior to that I don't think I was ready for something like that. I don't think she was either."
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky's history
Rihanna and Rocky were friends for a decade before they decided to have a romantic relationship. The two first met for a VMAs performance in 2012 and remained friends through the years. In 2019, the two started dating.
"We’ve known each other for a long time," said Rihanna in conversation with Interview Magazine. "I’ve seen him in relationships. He’s seen me in relationships. We’ve seen each other outside of relationships. We knew what we’re capable of, and the trouble that we could bring to each other’s lives. We can make or break each other’s hearts. And so, we started dating with a lot of caution … I just let whatever was supposed to happen, happen. It was just, ‘This is a flower. It’s either going to die or blossom. But I’m going to let it decide itself.’"
