Rob and Michele Reiner's children have shared their first statements following their parents' deaths. The couple was found dead in their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, this Sunday.
Jake, 34, and Romy, 28, shared their heartbreak with the public. "Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day," they said. "The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."
"We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life," continues the statement. "We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave."
Their brother, Nick Reiner, 32, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder after being accused of fatally stabbing his parents. According to a statement from PEOPLE, the couple was found in their bedroom.
In a previous report, The New York Times said that Romy found her father's body after a massage therapist reached out to her, saying that she wasn't able to contact her parents. Romy reportedly "fled" the scene, with one of her friends calling the police.
More about Rob and Michele Reiner
Rob and Michele Reiner were two beloved figures in Hollywood, with both working in the entertainment industry. Rob was an actor and filmmaker, known for directing classic films like "The Princess Bride," "This Is Spinal Tap," "When Harry Met Sally," and more. Michele was a photographer and producer, working on the cover art for films and on different film sets.
The couple met on the set of "When Harry Met Sally" and married in 1989. In interviews, Rob revealed that meeting Michele and falling in love with her had inspired him to change the ending of his beloved film, resulting in one of the most revered romantic comedies of all time, with the couple getting together at a New Year's Eve party.
"Originally, Harry and Sally didn’t get together. But then I met Michele, and I thought: OK, I see how this works,” he said to The Guardian in 2018. "I'd been single for 10 years, and I couldn't figure out how I was ever going to be with anybody. That gave birth to 'When Harry Met Sally,'" he continued. "I hadn't met anybody, so it was going to be the two of them seeing each other after years, talking, and then walking away from each other."
