Hollywood was shaken up last night after the tragic news that director Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele, 68, were found dead in their mansion in an apparent double homicide. With their son Nick arrested on murder charges, horrific details continue to come out about the situation. Those close to the couple are mourning, with tributes making their rounds on social media.
Today, Maria Shriver took to Instagram to share a gallery of photos of the couple, penning a heartfelt tribute, giving a look into who they were as parents, friends, and partners. "I loved Michele and Rob Reiner. They were among my closest friends," she began.
Shriver explained they raised their kids together, "from mommy and me on up." "We laughed together, we cried together, we played together, we dreamed together," she continued. The former first lady of California said they even had dinner together the past week before their death.
"They were in the best place in their lives: loving one another, loving their friends, their family, their country," she said. Maria made it a point to talk about their love of the United States, which seems to be a response to the shocking statement the president made.
Taking to Truth Social, Donald Trump called Rob "a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star," crediting their death "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS."
He later doubled down, saying, “He was a deranged person." “I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all. I thought he was very bad for our country," he added.
While Maria did not mention Trump's words, she continued her statement, writing, "They never gave up on our country. They wanted to make it better. They always, always wanted to make our world better, and they were willing to fight to make it the country they loved."
The 70-year-old continued, calling their friendship "a gift" and praising them as parents. "They loved their kids so much, and they never stopped trying to be really good parents. My love is with their family," she continued.
"I’m so sad for them. I’m devastated, gutted, shocked, stunned, and so deeply saddened, as are all of the people who loved them and who they loved. I hope people remember them as two deeply talented, kind, fun, loving, good, patriotic people who loved each other deeply," Shriver added.
"I’ll miss you, Michele. I’ll miss you, Rob. I love you both. Thank you for your friendship. God bless you both. Life will not be the same without you here, that’s for sure," the statement concluded. Maria's post has received over a hundred thousand likes with comments from her friends and fans sharing their condolences.
Chelsea Handler wrote, "Unimaginable. Thank god they were together. Neither would have survived finding the other like that. They were always so in love. The best couple. The best people."
Their son Nick was arrested and his being held without bail at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. The couple was also the parents of Jake, 34, and Romy, 28. In 1971, the filmmaker also adopted daughter Tracy, 61, after marrying the late Penny Marshall.
