Many fans were surprised when Shakira didn’t appear at this year’s Latin Grammy Awards. The Colombian superstar had been one of the major highlights of last year’s ceremony, so her absence and her missing red-carpet moment didn’t go unnoticed. But there was a very good reason she wasn’t in Las Vegas with the rest of the industry, she had an unforgettable night planned with her children.
While the 26th annual Latin Grammys were underway at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Shakira was across the West Coast in Los Angeles for the premiere of Zootopia 2. The singer, who once again voices the character Gazelle, caused a major stir when she arrived at the iconic El Capitan Theatre with her sons Milan, 12, and Sasha, 10.
The trio stunned everyone in coordinated lavender looks: Shakira in a sensational high-neck, long-sleeve gown with a daring side slit, and the boys in identical lavender suits paired with white shirts, bow ties, and sneakers.
As they walked the red carpet, Shakira and her sons drew every flashbulb their way. Milan and Sasha, already pros in front of the cameras, looked relaxed and confident while posing alongside their mom. Affectionate as ever, they hugged her, kissed her, and made it clear once again just how much they adore her.
"It was incredible. It’s something that only happens once in a lifetime.”
The children of Shakira and former soccer star Gerard Piqué were the stars of countless spontaneous, funny, joyful moments and they didn’t stop smiling. Thrilled to share such a special evening with their mom, they told reporters how excited they were. When Milan and Sasha entered the El Capitan Theatre, they were welcomed like true superstars, with cheers and applause, and they happily waved to the crowd from the stage in gratitude.
“I’m really happy to be in such good company tonight,” Shakira told Good Morning America. The singer, known for hits like Puntería, Acróstico, and Soltera, reflected on the time that has passed since the first Zootopia film.
“When I did the Zootopia 1, they were just babies. And for Zootopia 2, they’ve seen and witnessed the entire process with me. They saw me write the song 'Zulu' in the film, and they saw Gazelle evolve. They even have their own opinion because they think she looks like their mom,” she joked, laughing.
She also revealed a surprise: Milan and Sasha have small roles in Zootopia 2, voicing two bunnies. “It's so incredible. It’s something that only happens once in a lifetime,” Milan said. Sasha, equally thrilled, added that he would love to do more voice work in the future.
Why the matching lavender outfits?
Many fans wondered why Shakira and her sons chose this particular color, but Zootopia lovers likely recognized the reference immediately. As mentioned, Shakira voices Gazelle, a pop superstar who promotes unity and equality in a diverse animal world.
The animated character wears a striking lavender outfit, which Shakira also recreated in the music video for the film’s theme song. By dressing in head-to-toe lavender, Shakira, Milan, and Sasha were giving a stylish, heartfelt nod to Gazelle herself.
