Donald Trump celebrated Halloween with a roaring ’20s–themed party at Mar-a-Lago on Friday, and seemingly shared a glimpse into his marriage dynamic with Melania Trump.
According to the Daily Mail, the president leaned in to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and shared a rare, heartfelt sentiment. “No small talk,” Trump reportedly said. “One night, I don’t want to be disturbed and want to spend some time with Melania before I leave.”
The whispered remark offered an unusual glimpse into the couple’s private world. Mar-a-Lago’s ballroom was transformed into a Jazz Age fantasy, complete with giant gold balloons floating in the pool and 1920s-inspired décor.
The official theme, “A little party never killed nobody,” referenced the 2013 'Great Gatsby' film adaptation. The party drew members of Trump’s inner circle, including Rubio and his wife, and Trump’s son-in-law, Michael Boulos, who is married to Tiffany Trump.
The Halloween party came after a busy week for Trump and the First Lady. Earlier, the couple had returned from a whirlwind trip across Asia, then stopped at the White House to hand out candy to children during the annual trick-or-treating event.
Trump’s Halloween comment about Melania is the latest in a series of remarks revealing how he views their marriage. In mid-October, at a White House fundraising event, Trump recounted the couple’s first night at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Standing with Melania in the residential hallway, he marveled at the Lincoln Bedroom, describing the experience as “surreal.” “I say, ‘That was a surreal experience.’ I’m saying, ‘Do you believe this? We’re in the White House, and that’s the Lincoln bedroom!’” he told donors.
Trump went on to describe the White House itself as “just a special place,” reflecting on its historical significance and the responsibility he felt to care for it.
In September, a small but revealing episode at the United Nations showed Trump’s attentiveness to Melania. A stalled escalator could have caused a minor mishap.
Trump seized the moment during his General Assembly speech, saying, “If the first lady wasn’t in great shape, she would have fallen, but she’s in great shape," he said.
He continued, adding, “These are two things I got from the United Nations, a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter. Thank you very much. And by the way, it’s working now.”
