It’s the plot twist no one saw coming. Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas were gearing up for their first on-screen collaboration in the supernatural thriller "Deeper," but just as things were heating up behind the scenes, both the romance and the production suddenly hit pause.
Cruise, 63, and de Armas, 37, had reportedly been inseparable for nine months, spending every day together while training for the movie’s intense underwater sequences in London. Their chemistry, both off and on camera, had fans ready for cinematic sparks.
But according to Us Weekly, Ana called time on their whirlwind relationship after things started moving a little too fast. A source said, “She started to get a little uncomfortable with how fast it was going. She still likes Tom a lot, but she put the brakes on.”
Despite the split, insiders insist there’s no bad blood. The two remain on good terms and still share what sources describe as “undeniable chemistry.” Whether that chemistry will ever make it to the big screen, though, is suddenly uncertain.
The Film That Dove Into Trouble
"Deeper" — directed by Doug Liman ("Edge of Tomorrow") — follows an astronaut exploring the mysterious depths of the ocean, where supernatural forces blur the line between science and the unknown. The project had already been in the works for almost a decade, once set to star Bradley Cooper, before Cruise took the lead.
Rehearsals were reportedly well underway in London when the brakes were slammed, not just because of the breakup, but also due to some very 2025-level political chaos.
Trump’s Tariff Turmoil
According to internet personality Daniel Richtman, production was thrown into limbo after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on films made outside the United States, including those shot in the U.K.
That’s a massive hit for "Deeper," which had major scenes planned for British waters. The timing couldn’t have been worse.
Studios are now reportedly reconsidering whether to relocate the shoot or rework the budget entirely. One insider claimed that the film’s costs had already ballooned beyond $230 million, making executives hesitant to move forward under the new tax pressure.
While the production pause has left fans disappointed, Cruise and de Armas’ split might not be the end of the story. Sources told The Sun that the pair still “love each other’s company” and could “see how things go in the future.”
De Armas, meanwhile, is said to be focusing on her upcoming John Wick spin-off "Ballerina," while Cruise continues planning future projects even amid personal turbulence.
A friend of the "Blonde" star told the Daily Mail, “Ana thought this year would be very different, so she’s disappointed. But she’s not crying at home — she’s keeping busy and still friends with Tom.”
Will "Deeper" ever resurface? Insiders say the project isn’t dead, just treading water. The script is ready, the sets are built, and the anticipation remains sky-high.
As for Cruise and de Armas, their chemistry might have been too much for real life, but don’t count out a future reunion on screen. Sometimes, Hollywood loves a comeback almost as much as it loves a scandal.
