Emily Estefan, the youngest daughter of Cuban-American music icons Gloria and Emilio Estefan, and her partner Gemeny Hernandez have been together since 2016. The couple, who frequently appear at red carpet events and co-host the podcast 'In Our Own World,' were reportedly involved in a physical altercation in their Miami home that led to Hernandez’s arrest on Tuesday.
According to Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Department records, Hernandez, 31, faces charges of felony strong-arm robbery and misdemeanor battery. While the arrest affidavit does not explicitly name the victim, it identifies the alleged victim as Hernandez’s domestic partner of eight years, who, based on public information, is Emily Estefan, 30.
The altercation centered on a cellphone, which Hernandez allegedly used to strike Emily. After recovering the device, Emily contacted authorities, leading to Hernandez’s arrest. The details of the incident remain under investigation, and neither Emily nor her parents have issued public comments.
“The parties fell onto the floor as the struggle for the cellphone continued,” the affidavit states. “Once again, the victim was able to regain possession of her cellphone and conceal it under her body. Once the parties separated from each other, the victim called 911 to report the incident.”
The affidavit further detailed that Hernandez “forcefully took her cellphone from her hand and struck the victim with the cellphone.” A struggle ensued over the device, during which the victim suffered minor injuries, including a bruise on her left eye and scratches on the right side of her neck.
Hernandez, during a formal interview, denied taking the cellphone but admitted involvement in the altercation. She has since posted a $3,000 bond.
During Hernandez’s court appearance on Wednesday, Estefan was present and told the judge, “No, I didn't want her to be in jail. I begged the detective and the officers not to take her there. Whenever they come for domestic case, somebody's getting arrested.”
When asked whether a restraining order would be necessary, she added, “No, no, no, no. I don't want to put any kind of restraining order. I'm very cool with her family. I just want her, honestly, I think it's best for the both of us if we do take some space. But she doesn't deserve to be there in jail.”
The couple has a history of public displays of affection and shared milestones. Last year, they celebrated their eighth anniversary with affectionate messages.
Emily and Hernandez launched their podcast in 2022, and Emily’s bio describes their relationship as a “profound partnership … both in life and business since 2016.”
The couple was approaching their ninth anniversary this December, having publicly celebrated prior anniversaries with heartfelt social media messages. Despite the incident, both have maintained a public presence and continued engagements before the arrest, including Emily’s recent participation in her cousin Lina Luaces’ live social media broadcast.
