Long before serenading newlyweds Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos on their big day, Matteo Bocelli had already performed for popes, billionaires, and Hollywood elite, even gracing the stage at the Oscars.
The singer calls his appearance at the Bezos-Sanchez wedding one of the most significant moments of his career. The 27-year-old Italian vocalist, and son of iconic tenor Andrea Bocelli, performed during two pivotal moments of the star-studded celebration in Venice. As the couple made their entrance, he sang 'Anime Imperfette,' followed later by Elvis Presley’s timeless ballad 'Can’t Help Falling in Love.'
“At the end [of the day] I was singing in the most important moment of the event, that it's the ceremony ... basically they were declaring love, endless love,” Bocelli told Nine Australia. “So I was very emotional by the moment of both their entrance.”
Despite his experience on some of the world’s biggest stages, Bocelli confessed that the occasion brought a few nerves. “I felt very, very honored,” he shared. “Those people are used to everything. They can have the best of the best, and so for me, to be part of that event, it meant a lot, because it made me feel that my music means something to someone.”
“I was in front of many personalities, many talents with which I also grew up with, so I was kind of nervous. But luckily, it all went very well.” The invitation to perform came unexpectedly, he revealed. “I was very surprised,” Bocelli said. “It came pretty much out of the blue.”
The performance took place on the island of San Giorgio in Venice, where Bocelli was the only Italian artist featured at the opulent celebration. He recalled the lyrics of 'Anime Imperfette' resonating deeply with the spirit of the moment.
His father, Andrea Bocelli, remains not only a mentor but a source of inspiration. “My father, I feel like he's always been quite good in managing the private life, so probably I kind of learned from him,” Matteo said. “Luckily our fans are pretty, I would say, respectful with us, so they give us our privacy.”
Andrea himself recently commented on his son’s growing career, expressing pride in Matteo’s performance at the wedding during an interview with Us Weekly. “I was really honored they contacted Matteo. As a parent, I am extremely pleased,” Andrea said. “It would be strange if I [wasn’t] so happy about this!”
He added that he’s doing what he can to pass on everything he’s learned. “It has been a very long and tough path for me. We live in a very fast-paced world and we don’t have all the time we used to have when we were young,” he shared. “I try to convey all my knowledge to Matteo.
Other people tell me that his voice really resembles my voice. I give him some tips, and it gets easier. I hope [he] will listen to my tips!”
Andrea, who also has two other children, Amos, 29, and Virginia, 13, gives fans a deeper look at his family life in his documentary 'Andrea Bocelli: Because I Believe.'
