It looks like music may be a family affair in the Carey household. Mariah Carey recently revealed that her 14-year-old daughter, Monroe, could be heading toward a career in the music industry.
During a candid appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 56-year-old superstar opened up about her daughter’s growing interest in music. When host Jimmy Fallon asked whether Monroe was preparing to break out on her own, Carey didn’t dismiss the idea.
"I'm trying to get her to do her own thing. I think she wants to. So possibly," Carey responded. She added earlier, “My daughter's into music, and she likes music. She used to sing with me on my Christmas tour, but I don't know if she's doing it this year."
Though fans might know Monroe from her appearances alongside her mother, both on stage and on TikTok, Carey seems hopeful that her daughter will take the next step on her own.
The Grammy-winning singer also shares Monroe’s twin brother, Moroccan, with ex-husband Nick Cannon. The twins were born during the couple’s marriage, which lasted from 2008 until their divorce in 2016.
Over the years, Monroe has already given fans a glimpse of her performance chops. Last December, she joined her mom onstage at Madison Square Garden for the 'Merry Christmas One and All' concert. Just a year prior, she and Moroccan shared the stage with Carey at The Hollywood Bowl.
Even Kim Kardashian captured Monroe in action, filming her and Mariah performing “Jesus Born On This Day” during a holiday concert that Kardashian attended with her daughters, North and Chicago. Back in 2021, both twins also made a cameo in Carey’s music video for 'Fall in Love at Christmas.'
Despite encouraging her daughter’s growing passion for music, Carey has been vocal about giving her children space to choose their own paths. “I never say, ‘You guys gotta do this,’ you know? It’s whatever they want to do and they’re rehearsing for it and going for it and really working hard, so that’s impressive to me,” she told Access Hollywood in 2023.
Speaking to People, she shared, “As they grow up and decide what to do with their lives, it’s really nice for me to be able to see them performing onstage. I even like watching them getting ready, preparing to perform.” She also acknowledged the reality of showbiz, saying, "It's a hard kind of life, but they seem to really love performing, so I'm happy for them."
Co-parenting with Nick Cannon:
While Mariah remains open about her children's lives, she's more guarded when it comes to her relationship with Nick Cannon. During a September interview on CBS Mornings, host Gayle King asked how she handles co-parenting given Cannon’s very public and growing family.
Carey’s response was brief but telling, “Hmmm. I kinda feel like it’s best if I don’t talk about him because he can just be in his own world. No offense to him.”
Since their split, Cannon has fathered 10 more children with five different women. He recently addressed his own choices, describing them as a “trauma response” to his divorce from Carey. “I thought that was the answer a lot of times… Now, you’re leaving trauma every step of the way instead of fixing it from its origin,” he said on The Breakfast Club.
