Mindy Kaling is one of the most private celebrity moms. The 46-year-old has welcomed three children into the world, keeping the paternity details to herself. She's made it a point not to share their face on social media, but she has been letting fans into their world, most recently celebrating her youngest son Spencer's fifth birthday party.
On Wednesday, the Late Night star shared a gallery of images from his birthday party that had an amazing theme: Back to the Future. The party even had a special guest: a Delorean. The cake was awesome too, shaped after the iconic scene from the film when Marty has to harness the lightning strike hitting Hill Valley’s clock tower to power the DeLorean and send him back to 1985.
In the caption, she shared insight into what her son is like, calling him the "snuggliest, funniest guy ever." "Spencer loves monster trucks, hot dogs, Thomas the Tank Engine, donuts, someone scratching his hand, and probably most of all, Back to the Future, which is why it was the theme of his birthday!" she wrote. "I love this boy so much, such an original, with such a great sense of humor. “Good news, Mommy, it’s my birthday.” It is!! I LOVE YOU!" Kaling continued.
She also included other tender moments like beach days, Dodger games, baseball practice, and moments on the lake.
Mindy's low-key birthday tradition
Mindy is also the mom to daughters Anne, who will soon turn 2 in February, and Katherine, 7. She revealed in a recent interview that she usually waits until the kids turn 5 to have a party, calling herself "cheap."
She told Jimmy Kimmel on Jimmy Kimmel Live in February, "I'm not proud of this, but for the first four years of birthday parties for my kids, I am so cheap." "I don't invite the hundred people over. It's just me and my kids, and we do something at my dad and stepmom's house," she said, jokingly comparing herself to other moms in LA who have Maroon 5 showing up to sing. "You feel a little guilty when you see [big parties] on Instagram," Kaling explained.
She also revealed one hilarious tradition that happens at her dad's and stepmom's birthday dinner. "I like pretending I have to go to the bathroom. Then, I walk outside and put on an Elmo costume."
The next birthday she will have to dust off the Elmo costume for is Katherine, who will turn 8 in December.
