Serena Williams is her sister Venus's biggest fan, but that doesn't mean she won't get a little jealous when she sees her play doubles with somebody else. Over the weekend, she jumped on TikTok to poke fun at her new partnership with Leylah Fernandez at the U.S. Open.
In the clip, Serena films Venus and Leylah on court laughing and having fun together before turning the camera on herself, rolling her eyes, and forcing out a fake smile. She quipped in the caption: “When you see your sister @VenusWilliams has a new doubles partner @leylahanniefernandez and you are really happy she’s winning with someone else.”
Venus Williams responds
Venus ended up responding to the TikTok on the court on Monday after she and Fernandez pulled off a big third-round win. “Honestly, I think she had a very funny TikTok,” Venus told a reporter.
Venus said that Serena had given them advice before calling her out for not being in the stands. “But really, she’s so happy for Leylah and me, and she’s given us advice, and we just need her in the box. So my message is: Serena, you need to show up," she said.
It's been a special tournament for the 45-year-old, who is the oldest player in the U.S. Open since 1981, when Renée Richards set the record at 47 years old.
Venus was knocked out early in singles, but is crushing it with Fernandez. They upset 12th seeds Zhang Shuai and Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets on Monday to reach the quarterfinals. Tomorrow, they will compete against Taylor Townsend and Leylah Fernandez.
That win also means Venus is back in a Grand Slam doubles quarterfinal for the first time since Wimbledon 2016, when she won the title alongside Serena.
We will have to wait and see if Serena shows up for the match. She's been supporting her sister from home and on social media. After Venus’ singles loss to Karolína Muchová, Williams wrote on Instagram: “Strength, courage, determination, class, perseverance, inspiration…there aren’t enough words to describe how proud I am of you @VenusWilliams. P.S. I hope to be like you.”
