Kevin Bacon has officially sworn off one particular food, and the reason is surprisingly close to home. The Footloose star says living on his Connecticut farm with his wife, Kyra Sedgwick, has changed his entire relationship with eating. Surrounded by pigs, goats, alpacas, ponies, and even two newly gifted mini cows, Bacon admits he can’t bring himself to eat certain things anymore, especially those tied to his famous last name.
Speaking to People’s Sexiest Man Alive issue, he explained that his animals have shaped what ends up on his plate. “I no longer eat goat, and I no longer eat pig, because I have goats and I have pigs,” Bacon shared, adding with a laugh, “My wife is like, ‘We can’t get any more animals, because you’re going to stop eating everything!’”
Bacon and his wife have now adopted a farm-to-table lifestyle. This goes beyond eating natural and simply avoiding meat. He loves working in the garden, tending to fresh vegetables and herbs. He shared that it connects him with nature. “I love animals, they are a joy to be around, and they’re very, very calming for me.”
He continued, “But we also really love to go into the garden and get fresh herbs or tomatoes or basil or peppers, or zucchini. Taking something hot off the vine that feels warm and smells like it’s been created by all these natural forces of the sun and air and water and earth and dirt, and then putting it back into your body to sustain yourself…It’s a great lesson in terms of just how important it is to do our best to try to protect this boat that we’re all riding in.”
That hands-on connection to food is why Bacon also prefers home cooking. He explained, “I feel like if you’re always eating out or you’re always getting something to go, then you’re always giving your power over to the people that are going to prepare the food for you. I can’t do that my whole life. I need to have a little bit more control over what I’m putting in my body.”
Kevin Bacon's Gift to wife Kyra Sedgwick for her 60th birthday
The Emmy winner and Sedgwick, who share two grown children, Travis, 36, and Sosie, 33, continue to expand their family of animals. For her 60th birthday on August 19, Bacon surprised his wife with two miniature cows named Tater and Tot.
In a video posted to Instagram, he can be seen standing in the barn with the calves, telling fans, “When the love of your life has a big birthday, sometimes it’s important to think long and hard about something that she might really like, but she doesn’t really need. So happy birthday!”
