Chris Martin isn't letting an alleged affair scandal stop him from tradition. Unless you've been off the internet, you know the story. Coldplay accidentally made the most viral moment of the summer, collectively bringing the internet together when they accidentally caught former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron allegedly cheating with his former HR chief, Kristin Cabot.
Talking to the crowd on Monday, Martin explained, “We’ve been doing [the Jumbotron] a long time, and it is only recently that it became a … yeah," he said, avoiding the scandal directly. "Life throws you lemons and you’ve got to make lemonade. So, we are going to keep doing it because we are going to meet some of you," he continued.
Martin also read a sign by a fan who had seen the band three times in three months. “You were at that Boston gig,” he said. “Well, OK, thank you for coming again after that debacle,” he added.
Chris Martin's reaction to the couple
When the infamous moment happened at the Massachusetts show, the second they realized they were on the big screen, Cabot froze, covered her face, and walked off, while Byron disappeared just as fast.
From the stage, Martin didn’t miss a beat: “Wow, look at these two! Either they’re having an affair or they’re just really shy,” he joked, sending the audience into laughter. Later, he even admitted, “I’m not quite sure what to do… Oh, sh*t, I hope we didn’t do anything wrong."
That same night, not all kiss-cam moments went sideways. When another young couple appeared on the screen, Martin couldn’t resist. “OK, now listen, are you two a couple? Are you two a legitimate couple?” he asked. Thankfully, they were.
Since the scandal, both Cabot and Byron walked away from their roles at Astronomer. His wife removed her last name from her Facebook before shutting down her pages altogether.
Astronomer, the data-based company valued at 1.2B, launched an investigation and enlisted the help of Martin's ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, to do damage control.
On July 25, they released a video of her after Byron stepped down, where the 52-year-old says, “I’ve been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300-plus employees at Astronomer." “We’ve been thrilled so many people have a newfound interest in data workflow automation," she continued.
A source said the company reached out to her, and it was an easy decision. “Gwyneth has a really great sense of humor, and it felt funny enough for her to do,” a source told PEOPLE.
