Halle Berry is celebrating her 59th birthday today and is living her best life on vacation. The actress is also clearly unbothered after her ex-husband, David Justice, went on the record criticizing her for not “cooking or cleaning” during their marriage in the 1990s.
For her birthday, Berry shared a gallery of photos from a tropical paradise captioned, “Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering,” making it very apparent she wasn’t here for his take.
The former Catwoman star looked flawless while celebrating. She posed in a gold string bikini, showing off her toned body and curves.
She also shared a snap of herself cuddling and eating chips with her boyfriend, Van Hunt, on a bed that was literally on top of the ocean.
Other notable snaps included her laughing while drinking out of a coconut, which could have been another subtle dig at her ex-husband.
What her ex-husband said
On a recent episode of the All the Smoke podcast, Justice said he left the marriage because she wasn’t as “motherly” as he expected. He admitted, “If we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with? And at that time… she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem, like, motherly.”
In response, Berry shared a handwritten note from one of her two children. She shares Nahla Ariela, 19, with Gabriel Aubry, and Maceo Robert, 11, with Olivier Martinez.
Berry was married to the former MLB star from 1993 to 1997. Justice added that he eventually realized therapy, saying, "We honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy."
The internet slammed the former athlete and the "audacity" for him to expect the Oscar-winning actress to fit traditional gender roles.
Will Halle ever get married again?
Berry has been married three times. Following her marriage to Justice, she said "I do" to Eric Benet in 2001 before calling it quits in 2005, and later to Martinez from 2013 to 2016.
While things are going strong with Hunt, he revealed earlier this year that he proposed to her, but she didn't give a response.
“I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold as you can see," he said. As for why Berry hasn't said yes, she pointed to their past marriages. “I’ve been married three times. Van has been married once,” she said. “We don’t feel like we have to get married to validate our love in any way. We don’t.”
Still, she’s not completely opposed to saying “I do” again. “I think we will get married just because, out of the people I’ve been married to, this is the person I should have married,” she said. Plus, they've already had a commitment ceremony, led by her son.
