UPDATE

Wendy Williams' guardianship will continue after medical tests - but not everyone is giving up

The recent report contradicts what she said in March

Wendy Williams' birthday wish to get out of her guardianship is not coming true, and fans who believe she should be free will be disappointed to learn that it is staying in place.

After completing an evaluation with a "significant number of tests," including neuropsychological, medical, and brain imaging, doctors have determined an "opinion" about her condition and diagnosis, according to legal documents PEOPLE got their hands on.

The outlet notes that the condition was not listed, but a source told them the diagnosis was frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and aphasia, a diagnosis first made public in 2023. The 61-year-old has been under legal guardianship since May 2022. The docs also show Wendy’s guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, is asking the court to extend that guardianship for three more months, until November 5.

But things aren’t simple; the attorney mentions “complications” coming from different sides, including Wendy’s ex-husband, some family members, and their lawyers, who plan to challenge the guardianship and Morrissey’s role as guardian.

It's not just Williams Circle that's concerned. Fans have been rallying around her, and questioning Morrissey's motives following documentaries, viral photos, and interviews that paint a disturbing picture of her care.

Earlier reports said the contrary

The reports seem to contradict earlier reports from March 2025, when she was removed from her assisted living facility and taken to a hospital by the NYPD.

During this time, TMZ reported that a caregiver not connected to the guardianship, Gina Monterroso, called Adult Protective Services to investigate what she called “troubling circumstances.” She raised concerns, saying Williams' rights and autonomy may be compromised due to "unjust confinement," questioning if the guardian was misrepresenting Wendy’s actual mental and emotional state to the courts.

She was taken to Hill Hospital in New York City for a psychiatric evaluation, and TMZ reported at the time she was alert and oriented according to the test and passed the mental capacity test with flying colors - a perfect 10/10. This test came just after the former talk show host formally asked a judge to end the guardianship.

Williams confirmed it herself, calling into Good Day New York, saying her caretaker was there as well. "She had those tests, she’s been deemed she is not incapacitated," Monterrosa told TV anchor Rosanna Scotto. “I think it’s great news, and it’s public, and everybody knows factually that Wendy’s not incapacitated.”

Disturbing details

Disturbing photos from earlier this year showed Williams crying, pressing her hands against a window, even tossing a handwritten note out, pleading for help. Her niece, Alex Finnie, has spoken out too, saying Wendy is being “punished,” and she shared heartbreaking details like Williams' beloved cats were taken away.

It was also reported that the NYPD and APS launched investigations into whether she was being unfairly confined at her assisted living facility. She’s reportedly stuck in a memory care unit, unable to leave without permission. However, it does not seem like any new updates have come from those investigations.
