Luca Guadagnino might bring a Hollywood couple together on the big screen. After his DC Studios film, Sgt. Rock was delayed a full year, the director pivoted, and is now in talks to take Artificial to Amazon MGM Studios. While deals are still in motion, Deadline reported that Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro, and Anora breakout star Yura Borisov are all in early talks to star. What makes the news even more interesting is that Garfield and Barbaro are a couple.
The script, written by Simon Rich, centers on the chaotic 2023 events at OpenAI, when CEO Sam Altman was suddenly fired and rehired within days. If everything aligns, this would mark the first time the real-life, famously private couple, Garfield and Barbaro, work together onscreen.
The pair first sparked dating rumors back in January after posing together at W Magazine’s Best Performances party. Since then, they’ve been spotted at a Richard II performance in London, they left the Vanity Fair Oscar Party together before heading to Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s after-party, and have even gone grocery shopping together, with the actress wearing his cardigan.
Plus, the Spider-Man star picked her up after her Met Gala debut. In the now-viral video, Garfield waited for Barbaro in the lobby of The Mark Hotel after the exclusive event, grinning as she walked in, greeting her with a sweet hug.
While sources have shared information here and there with media outlets, Garfield has always played it close to the chest, telling Esquire he won’t “confirm or deny anything” about his dating life, but fans are definitely reading between the lines.
Barbaro, who is fresh off an Oscar nomination for A Complete Unknown and a standout Met Gala debut, seems just as focused on the work. If they were to be cast in Artificial, it would be the first time they do a press tour together, and it would be very difficult for them to avoid questions about their relationship. But it would be a great promotion for the film.
