Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have officially ended their nearly eight-year, on-and-off relationship.

The news came out Wednesday, confirmed by multiple sources to PEOPLE. “It feels final this time,” one insider said, signaling the end of what had been a quiet romance.

The couple was famously private, rarely sharing details about their relationship and never appearing together on red carpets. Their low-key approach only fueled speculation over the years, including rumors of a secret engagement.

In fact, back in March 2024, an insider told Page Six they had been engaged for six years, though neither Johnson nor Martin ever confirmed those claims. Throughout 2024, breakup rumors circulated on and off, but their representatives denied them strongly in August, insisting they were “happily together.”

Better days between the couple

Their last public moments as a couple happened just last month. On May 16, they were spotted in Malibu enjoying a quiet yoga session, recharging away from the spotlight. Then, just three days later, Johnson flew to the Cannes Film Festival alone, attending the premiere of Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest on May 19.

Throughout their relationship, Johnson and Martin deliberately kept their private life out of the public eye. Since first dating in 2017, they avoided the typical celebrity couple spotlight, choosing instead to keep things low-key and out of the tabloids.

Martin touched on the subject in a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, choosing not to talk about the engagement rumors and relationship. “It is important to say that [romantic love] is such a big factor in everything, even though it feels right to keep it precious and private; I’m not denying its power,” he said.

Now, both are moving forward in their own worlds. Johnson is busy promoting two highly anticipated films: Splitsville and Materialists, the latter starring Pedro Pascal and scheduled for release in June 2025.

Martin, meanwhile, is deep into his sold-out world tour with Coldplay. Their next show is set for Friday in Las Vegas, and the tour will continue through September, ending with a final night in London.
