Pope Leo XIV recently met with JD Vance and Marco Rubio, marking the first interaction between his leadership and the Trump Administration. In one of the most noteworthy moments of their encounter, Vance didn't kiss the Pope's Ring of the Fisherman, a tradition that's followed by most Catholics across the world.

Vance discussed his decision with Ross Douthat, the host of the podcast "Interesting Times."

"The protocol is that American presidents and vice presidents do not bow before foreign leaders and do not kiss any rings. And obviously, given our history, you can appreciate that," said Vance.

“So, no sign of disrespect, but it’s important to observe the protocols of the country that I love, and that I’m representing and that I serve as vice-president of, the United States."

Vance also made it clear that he was not visiting the Vatican in his role as a Catholic citizen. “I’m there as the vice-president of the United States and the leader of the president’s delegation to the Pope’s inaugural Mass," he said.

Vance provided Pope Leo with various gifts on their first meeting, including a jersey of the Chicago Bears, representing the Pope's hometown, with the words "Pope Leo XIV" engraved on the back.

"The United States people are extremely excited about you," said Vance, according to a report from the Vatican. A statement shared some details of the meeting, revealing that it was cordial. "There was an exchange of views on some current international issues, calling for respect for humanitarian law and international law in areas of conflict and for a negotiated solution between the parties involved," reads the statement.

More details from the meeting shared that Vance delivered a letter to the Pope from President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, inviting him to the White House.
