Shakira faces another setback, cancels latest concert: ‘My kids were excited’

What the Colombian singer has been able to celebrate, however, is the carnival in her hometown, sharing photos of Milan and Sasha dressed up in costumes.

In less than two weeks since kicking off her Las mujeres ya no lloran tour on February 11 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Shakira has already had to cancel two concerts—this time in Medellín, Colombia. There's no doubt that her return to the stage has been a huge success, but at the same time, she has faced a series of unexpected setbacks. This latest blow is particularly painful for her, as it comes just when she was set to perform once again in the country where she was born.

Only a week ago, she had to cancel her show in Lima, Peru, after being hospitalized with gastritis. Now, the issue isn’t her health but the logistics of setting up for what was supposed to be her second Colombian concert. The show, originally scheduled for Monday at Estadio Atanasio Girardot, was called off, with Shakira breaking the news to fans on social media Saturday.

“I’m so sad I can’t perform for you”

“Hello everyone! I’m so sad that I can’t get on stage and sing for you as I had hoped,” the 48-year-old music icon shared. “My kids were excited to visit Medellín, and I was eager to reconnect with you and share the surprises I had in store.” She was referring to Milan, 12, and Sasha, 10, who are traveling with her on tour.

“I regret the inconvenience, especially for those who traveled. This situation is beyond my control and that of my production team, but I’m hopeful we will find a new date to celebrate together soon,” she explained. “I appreciate your unwavering support. I love you all and look forward to seeing you soon,” she signed off, simply, as “Shak.”

Why the show was canceled

Her concert promotion team, Páramo Presenta, also released a statement over the weekend to explain what happened.

“Hello Medellín. During the preparations for the show set for February 24, the roof of the stage installed by the local production sustained damage that creates a safety concern for the artist, her crew, and most importantly, the audience,” they announced.

“The promoter and the artist's team are collaborating and hope to reschedule the date in the future. We recognize that this decision may be disappointing for those eagerly awaiting the concert, but everyone’s safety comes first.”

For now, fans in Medellín will have to be patient as they wait for news on a new date.

Making the most of the time off

But while the cancellation was a letdown, Shakira did get to enjoy something special—celebrating Barranquilla’s carnival with her family.

“Proud to teach my kids about my culture and the joy of my people. Long live the guacherna in carnival!” she wrote alongside photos of her and her sons embracing the festive spirit.

Milan and Sasha, dressed up for the occasion, joined their mom in the traditional nighttime parade that kicks off the carnival celebrations. In the images, the three are seen wearing colorful costumes and face paint, fully immersing themselves in the party atmosphere.

Though the Medellín show didn’t go as planned, Shakira still found a way to make the most of the moment—this time, by passing down her love for her hometown’s traditions to her children.
