The movies you need to watch before the 2020 Oscars

One of the biggest snubs this year was Greta Gerwig not getting nominated for Best Director for her work in this classic remake. Still, the film received several nods, including Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan, Best Supporting Actress for Florence Pugh, Best Original Music Score and Best Costume. Although Greta didn’t receive a nomination for directing, she still scored a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay as well as Best Picture.

Antonio Banderas stars as a film director in his physical decline in this Spanish-language movie (nominated for Best Foreign Language Film). The powerful role also earned the actor his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Lead Role. Penelope Cruz stars opposite Antonio making this star-studded flick one to watch this season.

Directed by Noah Baumbach, this Netflix film got a whopping six Oscar nominations, including Best Actor for Adam Driver, Best Actress for Scarlett Johansson, Best Supporting Actress for Laura Dern, Best Original Music Score, Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. Like the title suggests, it tells the love story between a married couple, but the director decided to tell this love story through the lens of divorce. It’s sad, funny, but most of all, it’s beautiful and assures audiences that not all endings are sad.

Starring three leading ladies—Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie—this movie tells the true story of the women from Fox News who took down Roger Ailes. It’s smart, thrilling and an emotional rollercoaster that you won’t want to get off. Charlize is nominated for Best Actress, Margot is nominated for Best Supporting Actress and the film got a nod for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Starring an A-list cast, including Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas and Jamie Lee Curtis, this modern Whodunnit tale has twists and turns to keep you at the edge of your seat for two hours. The film got major nods during the Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture, Best Actress for Ana and Best Actor for Daniel, but only scored one nomination—Best Original Screenplay—for the 2020 Oscars. Still, it’s worth checking out.

One of the standout movies of the year. The Korean-language film surpassed the Foreign Language category and got a total of six nominations, including Best International Feature Film as well as Best Picture, Best Director, Original Screenplay, Editing and Production Design. For this flick, it’s best to go in without any prior knowledge of the movie and just enjoy cinema at its finest.
