Makeup enthusiasts love finding versatile uses for their favorite products, but some questions spark debate—like whether lipliner can double as eyeliner. Although the two products seem similar in texture and form, they serve distinct purposes.

So, is using a lipliner on your eyes a good idea? The answer is: sometimes, but it requires careful consideration. Here’s what you should know.

Lipliner vs. Eyeliner: Key Differences

Lipliners and eyeliners might look alike, but their formulations differ significantly:

  • Lipliners are made for the skin around the lips, which is less sensitive than the eye area. They are typically creamier to avoid dryness and often contain ingredients safe for ingestion since they’re applied near the mouth.

  • Eyeliners are specially designed for the delicate skin around the eyes. They undergo rigorous testing to ensure they won’t irritate or harm the eyes, making them safe for use on or near the waterline.

Is It Safe to Use Lipliner on Your Eyes?

Lipliners are not ophthalmologist-tested, which means they may contain ingredients or pigments unsuitable for the eye area. Some lipliners may irritate the eyes or cause redness, itchiness, or infections. However, if the lipliner is labeled as safe for use near the eyes (some multipurpose products are), it can be an alternative.

The main concern lies in the product’s ingredients. Fragrances, dyes, and certain pigments in lip products can irritate the sensitive eye area or even trigger allergic reactions. Therefore, checking the product label for safety information is essential.

How to Safely Use Lipliner as Eyeliner

If you’re in a pinch and decide to use lipliner as eyeliner, follow these precautions:

  • Check Ingredients: Ensure the product doesn’t contain harmful or irritant ingredients.
  • Stick to Neutral Tones: Opt for nude, brown, or red lipliners that mimic traditional eyeliner shades. Bright or bold colors may not suit your eyes or contain unsafe pigments.
  • Sharpen the Pencil: Sharpen your lipliner to ensure a clean, fresh application and reduce the risk of bacterial contamination.
  • Perform a Patch Test: Test the product on your skin to rule out allergic reactions before applying it to your eyes.

Better Alternatives

While it’s possible to use lip liner as eyeliner in a pinch, it is generally not advisable for regular use due to potential safety concerns. Lip liners are formulated for the skin on the lips, which differs from the more delicate skin around the eyes. Eye safety is paramount, as the eyes are susceptible to irritants and specific ingredients that may be present in lip products.

For those looking for multifunctional makeup options, many cosmetic brands now offer dual-purpose pencils that have been tested explicitly for safe application on lips and eyes. These products are formulated to be gentle, providing the versatility you want without compromising safety or reliability. Opting for these specially designed products can ensure a flawless and safe makeup application while allowing for creative versatility.
