Protecting your skin should always be a priority, but if a sunburn happens, there is a “little secret” ingredient that might help you treat it. Dr. Sejal Shah shared with HOLA! USA how to tackle sunburns and sun aftercare.

“A sunburn is an inflammatory reaction to excess damaging ultraviolet radiation. It is a radiation burn,” shares board-certified dermatologist Dr. Shah.

If you or your loved one gets a sunburn this summer, follow the following steps below to help treat it:

Step 1: Take cool baths or showers to relieve pain and cool the area. Pat dry the skin, so it is not completely dry, and then apply moisturizer to soothe the skin and improve dryness.

Step 2: Look for a post-sun spray containing soothing and anti-inflammatory ingredients like Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) or aloe vera. A product like S’eau Prima’s Foundational Face Mist will help soothe your sunburned skin and purify skin by fighting bacteria and reducing inflammation thanks to its key ingredient, HOCl.

A quick tip: HOCl is an excellent alternative for those allergic to aloe vera. HOCl activates the skin’s ability to heal itself, soothing redness and rallying your white blood cells to begin the repair process. This natural skin booster has the power to tame skin disruptions and irritations, making it your new favorite after-sun spray ingredient.

Step 3: Apply a moisturizer with ingredients that soothe and support the skin, such as ceramides, niacinamide, and chamomile. If the skin is susceptible, apply a hydrocortisone cream.

Step 4: Drink lots of water! A sunburn draws fluid to the skin’s surface and away from the rest of the body. Drink extra water when you are sunburned to help prevent dehydration. A quick tip: Consider NSAIDs to reduce swelling and discomfort.

Step 5: Let your skin fully heal. Wear clothing that covers your skin outdoors and apple SPF 30+ every 2 hours.
