You've probably seen the word "taurine" on energy drink cans, but it does a lot for your body and mind than you probably know.

What is taurine?

Taurine is an amino acid that your body makes naturally, but you can also get it from foods like fish, shellfish, poultry, and dairy. It’s one of the most plentiful compounds in the brain, nervous system, and throughout the body. Unlike some amino acids, it’s not used to build proteins, but it plays an important role in the health and function of the body's organs.

Why it's good for you

Taurine offers a wide range of benefits for your body and mind. For heart health, it can help regulate blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and support overall cardiovascular function. When it comes to the brain, taurine aids your nervous system in communicating more efficiently and protects your brain cells from damage.  It can also promote a normal stress response.

Taurine can help with anxiety

Taurine can boost energy and endurance, as studies have found that taurine may improve exercise performance and reduce fatigue. Your eyes benefit too, since your retina contains high levels of taurine, which helps protect against vision loss over time. 

For those struggling with insomnia, Taurine can even support sleep by calming the nervous system through neurotransmitters like GABA, reducing brain excitability, and promoting relaxation. It may also help regulate melatonin, making it easier to fall asleep and enjoy better sleep quality.

How to get more taurine

If you eat a balanced diet with seafood, meat, and dairy, you’re probably making enough of it naturally. But plant-based eaters or anyone looking for an extra boost can also find taurine in supplements. 

You can purchase taurine supplements online or at the store, but talk to your doctor before starting them. Some might recommend taking 1000mg twice a day, especially if you're struggling with anxiety or insomnia. Per Mindlabpro, taurine dosages for anxiety range from 500-2000 mg per day and are not associated with any side effects. Some doctors might recommend taking it along with a GABA supplement.
