Sam Asghari has broken his silence on his marriage to Britney Spears, describing her conservatorship as the most bewildering challenge he encountered. The 30-year-old actor initially assumed Spears' immense fame would be the most difficult aspect of their relationship, but he soon realized that the legal constraints governing her life were far more overwhelming.
Speaking on Kate and Oliver Hudson's "Sibling Revelry" podcast, Asghari recalled his reaction to learning about the conservatorship. "One day, I started learning about what the conservatorship is, and that's when I was like, 'Wait a minute. I thought I'm in America. What do you mean someone over the age of 18 needs permission from their parents?'" he said. "That was the most difficult and weird spiral thing that I've witnessed in my life."
Despite the challenges, Asghari said his priority was to support Spears through her struggles. "I think the best thing to do is to provide support at that moment, and that's what I did—I provided as much as I could," he explained. "This was my experience in life that I had to go through very gently because if you do anything wrong, you say the wrong thing."
Asghari was a vocal supporter of Spears during the Free Britney movement, ultimately leading to her conservatorship's termination in November 2021. The legal arrangement, spearheaded by her father, Jamie Spears, had dictated nearly every aspect of her personal and financial life since 2008.
"One of the hardest things, I think, to deal with when you go into entertainment is your parents and the people around you, and everything that happens," Asghari noted. "Usually, the people that are around you, the people that you allow into your circle, you kind of are vulnerable to them."
While their marriage ultimately ended, Asghari insists he has no regrets. "I'm always gonna be grateful and happy that it ever even happened," he said.
The couple, who wed in June 2022, announced their separation in August 2023. Their divorce was finalized in 2024, and sources confirmed that it was amicable and that a prenuptial agreement protected Spears' wealth. "The divorce was amicable, and the prenup was not challenged," a source told PEOPLE at the time.
On November 2, Spears celebrated her 43rd birthday and was officially declared legally single by the state of California. TMZ reported that court documents confirming her single status were released seven months after her divorce from Asghari.
Since their split, Spears has been embracing her newfound freedom. In October 2024, she posted a video of herself dancing in her wedding dress with the caption, "The day I married myself. Bringing it back because it might seem embarrassing or stupid, but I think it's the most brilliant thing I've ever done!!!"
Spears has been romantically linked to her landscaper, Paul Soliz, while Asghari has moved on with model Brooke Irvine. The pair were spotted out together earlier this month.
Although Spears has a rocky relationship with Soliz, she has turned her energy into rebuilding her relationship with her son, Jayden, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline. They are also parents to Sean, 19.
Despite their marriage not standing the test of time, both Asghari and Spears appear to be focused on their futures, moving on from a tumultuous and transformative chapter.
